TIMARU SALE

TIMARU, January 30.

At the third wool Pale to-day 7451 bales were catalogued, but a considerable number were withdrawn. The wool was a very poor lot, and \ery earthy. This, combined with the fact that much of the wool offered had been passed in at previous sales, made the sale slow. There was a decided lack of animation, and for coarse crossbred, which comprised the bulk of the catalogue, there was practically no" competition. It is stated lhat buyers received intimation of a 10 per cent, drop at London, thus restricting operations. Fully one-third was passed in. The number of bales actually sold did not exceed 60 per cent. Inferior crossbred declined, compared with the second sale, from %d to Id. medium crossbred id, three-qua.rterbred from par to id. The top pnc« was lOJd for 14 bales of halfbred ewe. Prices were: Crossbred, 4^d to 6d ; three-quarterbred, 6d to 7d ; halfbred, Bid to 10|d. Merinos improved a little, bringing 9d to 9Jjd, compared with 8d to 9d at the last sales. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company (Limited) is in receipt of the following cable advice from its London office regarding the progress of the wool sales:— "The ealcs gain firmness as they progress. Since the opening of the sales prices are higher by £d per lb for good and medium greasy merino, and lower by par to id per lb for medium and coarse greasy crossbred, unless suitable for the American market."
