Monday Evening.

Mr asnd Mrs Lea.tham ha-ve returned from the Lakes district where they spent some <■ weeks enjoying fishing expeditions, and are spending a week or so at Chingford before proceeding north.

Miss Mary M'Liean (Napier) came down for the golf tournament, andi is visiting Miss Winnie Scott.

Mr and Mrs GottheK (Sydney) are at present on a visit to their daughter, Mrs Emil Hallenstein, London, street.

Mrs Jack "Wright is in town for a few days, and is staying at Redioofs with Mrs 'Phil Wright. Mrs Jack Wright, with her Children, leaves focr Europe in March.

Mrs and Miss Maiy Ritchie returned on Saturday night from Cannington, where they havei spent the summer holidays. Mr ana Mrs Ritchie and Miss Mary Ritchie leave for England in February.

Mr H. E. Hart left on Wednesday for Sydney, where his daughter, Miss Brightey Hart, is to be married at the end of January.

Mrs Pyne, -with her daughters, -who have been staying at Onslow House for Mine weeks, returned by Friday's steamer to Christchurch. l

Mrs and the Misses Royse have from Moeiaki.

The Rev. Mr and Mrs Mackenzie (Christchurch) are visiting Dunedin at present, and are guests of Mis Ramsay, Royal Terrace, during their stay.

Miss Kerr and' Miss Hamilton returned by Tuesday's steamer from Tasmania, where they have spent some months.

OAMARTJ, January 10. The farewell social to Archdeacon and Mrs Gould took place on Tuesday -evening in St. Luke's Schoolroom. The hall was very daintily decorated with stands of flowers and pot plants, and Mrs and Miss Gould were each presented with a beautiful bouquet. A very good musical' programme was presented, songs being rendered by Mesdames Batson and Mowbray, Miss Bennett, Messrs Armstrong; a trio by Mrs Batson, Miss Bennett,

and Mr Burry; pianoforte dhiet by Messrs Burry and Taylor; vocal duet, Messrs Burry and Bulleid; and a chorus, "Song of the Vikings," completed a most enjoyable entertainment. Th« feature of the evening was the presentation of » purse of sovereignr and gold) watch> suitably inecribec. by Dr Garland on behalf of the parishioners to their beloved! and esteemed] vicar. Speeches were also made by Mr M'Douall and Hon. 'i\ Y. Dunoan. Archdeacon Gould, who on rising to reply was greeted! with loud applause, thanked one and all for the generous gifts, and regretted that duty compelled his removal from' the large wumber of friends h« had mude during Ma 18 years' residence in Oamaru. The singing of "For they are jolly good fellows" and three genuine, heaxty, British, cheers for Archdeacon, Mrs Gould, and family concluded the function. During supper the watch was sent the rounds for inspection, and 1 after singing "Auld lang syne" and wishing the guests of the evening god-speed,, the company dispersed. Mr and Mrs Stuart Holmes-, having returned from their trip to the Old Country, are paying a round of visits in Oamaru before settling in Dunedin. Mrs Batson is spending a few daye at Hampden as the guest of Mra Davis, St. Stephen's vicarage. Mr and Mrs A. W. Gillies (Hawera) have been in Oamaru 'for the Christmas holidays.

CHRISTCHURCH, January 11. There is very little news to give you this week. Large numbers , of people are still out of town, and New Brighton, Sumner, and the various other holiday resorts near Christchurch are crowded with visitors. The weather has been simply perfect for picnics and other outdoor amusements, and everyone has been taking full advantage of the ■warm, sunny days. On Thursday the New Brighton annual gala was held, and proved most successful. Every kind of amusement imaginable, from a baby show to a military display, was provided by the capable committee, who were cerainly rewarded for their efforts by the appreciation of the Large crowds who travelled down to New Brighton during the day. In the evening an excellent display of fireworks was given at Wainoni Park, which ia becoming a more andi more - popular place with pleasure-seekers. We are all delighted, with "Brewster's Millions," which is now being played in the Theatre Royal by Mr J. C. Williamson's •clever company, but, a» you have already seen it in Dunedin, it is not necessary to tell you anything about the play itself. Mrs Brough, who still has many friends and admirers in phristchurch, was given a very cordial reception on the opening night, and at the end of the fourth act she was presented with «. beautiful bouquet. Among the audiences during the week were Mr and Mr® H.- Moore, Mrs and th<* Misses Burns, Mts and Miss Merton, Mrs and Miss Boyle, Mr Watclrop, Mr and Mira CJowlisluiw, - Mrs Chafiey, Mr and Mrs M'Bride, and Mr and Mrs P. Mr and Miss Bloxam have returned fhome after a short holiday in the south.

The excitement of the Christmas and New Year festivities is now over, and we are experiencing a very dull time as far as social life is concerned. Everyone who can possibly get away is out of town. Those who are left are looking forward to the coming of Clara Butt. "Brewster's Millions'' has drawn very good houses (mostly country visitors). "1/ady Madcap" seems to have been the favonrite play so iar. It is intensely amusing

Mrs. H. Hadfield (Waikanai) is spending a few weeks with lier mother, Mrs Tuckey.

Miss N. Heath (Hawke's Bay) is at present the guest of Mrs D. T. Stuairt. Miss Lulu Elwen is visiting Dunedin, and is staying with Mrs Sise. Mars Noble Campbell (Dannevirke) was in town for a few days' shopping.

Mrs King 'has returned from her visit to Palmierston.

Miss Ltoughnan (Christchurch;' is staying with her aunt, Mrs Robert Loughnan. Mrs Levin and Miss Mona Levin are passengers by the Paparoa, which is expected to arrive from England very shortly. Mr and. Mas Oswald Beere hawe returned from a very enjoyable motor tour through the Wairarapai and Raiigitikei districts. Mrs Kelson (Otaki) is staying in Wellington for a few days. Dr Elizabeth Gwnn has returned from a short visit to the country.

Mr and Mrs F. Waldegraye^ leave on January 17 for Sydney, ©n route for England.
