The bookmakers' chops in ChristhcurcA have been closed in consequence of the passing of the new Gaming Act. and it is understood that a movement ib now on foot for the formation of a, New Zealand Bookmakers' Association with the object of advising raoim? clubs on the issue of license* and of cxerc-ieingr a general supervision over ilio bookmakers. to one small portion of the course and ' compelling them to close their books five" minutes before the totalisator closes, the result will be that legislation will have to be faced next session compelling the clubs to carry out the spirit of the gaming laws. Their action, he considers, will considerably strengthen the hands of those who are anxious to see the totalisator abolished. It is understood that practically all the bookmakers' offices which formerly existed in Dunedin have been closed in consequence of the passing of the act. —
