A solitary* oyclint, who elected to eycU to Broken River from Otira, had a some* what thrilling' experience this morningl When - crossing' the Waimakariri River, which was subsiding from a heavy fresh* and ye"t sufficioniry high a.» to almost prevent the coaches from crossing, he took cramp in one of his legs The heavy fresh rook him off his feet, and ho wa* taken down, but,' fortunately, was led into the bank, and managed to save himself. Une of (he coach -drivers crossing at the timo harried to his assistance, when it was found that hft was unconscious, having swallowed a considerable quantity of water JTirst aid was supplied, and he was taken to O'MalleT 1 ?, vrhero, in the course of an hour or so, ho rallied. The bicycle was washed away. Ho was able to prooeed to Broken River by coach. The escape was a narrow one. For £1 steam will do work which wouUt cnat £160 if done by hand.
