FAMOUS MAORI CHIEF DEAD.
AUCKLAND, November 26. Wirhana Te Kapa Te Aoterangi, the principal Maori chief of the Te Akau Block, died at Kawa on Saturday, aged 73 years. He was well known to the Maoris throughout the Dominion as one of their most noted chiefs, and it was mainly by his advice that Mahuta agreed to take a seat in the Legislative Council. During the Waikato war Te Aoterangi threw in his lot with tho pak<?ha, and on differsnt occasions helped the Queen's soldiers. He was a genial old veteran, and in his later years was a member of the Waikato Maori Land Council. A large tangi is being held at Kawa.
