LONDON, November 18. The death of Dr Moncure Daniel Conway, author, is announced. The deceased was 75 years of age.

Dr Conway studied law, hut in 1850 he entered the Weeleyan ministry, and a few years later he became a Unitarian minister at Washington. He was compelled to leave this church, however, in 1856, owing to his sermong against slavery. He then became Unitarian minister at Cincinnati. On the outbreak of the war hi 1861 he lectured gratuitously throughout the Northern States, advocating emancipation. The deceased was the author of a large number of publications.

I MR MAURICE JOEL, j Our readers will regret to loam of the death of Mr Maurice Joel, who .passed away at his residence, Onslow street St. Clair, on the 13th, m his^ 79th year. Mi- Joel was well-known in the 'city, and was respected by a large circle of friends. He was born in 1829 at North Shields, England, and was educated at Newcastle-on-Tyne. Ho was for some time in partnership with his brother in the Birmingham and Sheffield goods trade. In 1853 he went to Melbourne, where he carried on business, and he also acted as a gold buyer at Ballarat. Having in this way acquired some mercantile experience, Mr Joel came to Dunedin in 1861 and commenced business in Princess street as a general hardware merchant and chandler. Three years later ho purchased the Red Lion brewery in Great King street and George streets He retired from the brewing business about 18 months ago, not having, from failinghealth, taken any active part in the management for a few years. Mr Joel took a considerable part in puWie affairs. He waa one of the founders of the Jewish congregation in 1862, end for five years, three of them consecutively, he was president of the congregation, while for 10 sears, of which nine were consecutive, he was treasurer. He was also president of the Jewish Philanthropic Society for several years. The foundation stone of the present Synagogue in Moray place was laid by Mr Joel on November 11, 1880. Mr Joel was for a number of years a member of the Otago Harbour .Board. His name was on the list of those forming the committee of the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition in 1889-90. The deceased gentleman was a director of the Westport Coal Company for several _yea.rs, and he was on the directorate of the Standard Insurance Company at the time of hia death. Mr Joel had not enjoyed the best' of health for 6ome years, and his death was not unexpected, his condition having been somewhat- critical for the last month or six weeks. Mr Joel waa married in 1859 to the daughter of Mr A. Woolf, of the Cape of Good Hope, and afterwards of Melbourne, and he leaves one son and three daughters, one of whom is M'l-s Levi, of St. Clair.
