GREYMOUTH HARBOUR.

GREYMOUTH, July 9. The Greymouth bar, owing to the heavy south-west gale, shoaled up 10 feet in 24 hours. It soon, however, scoured again, but shipping was delayed for three days. It is understood that the Minister of Marine is favourable to the work in the Lagoons, which will provide extra berthing 1 ' accommodation, ■ and a greater scour on the bar in time of drought. It is anticipated that this work will be commenced within .a fortnight. The coal and timber companies supplied to the Greymouth Harbour Board to-day an estimate of their export for 1908-1909, which showed thafc the trade of the port will be more than double what it i« now, and a. very great extension will be necessary afc the port to meet the requirements. Mtf J. P. Maxwell arrived from Wellington i yesterday, and ifl to consult with fcb© member* of the board as to the feasibility of constructing a deep sea harbour at Greymouth. This would be a iarp» scheme* but ac it would only coat one-third of what: would be the outlay at Point Elizabeth, and as it is believed thai -when it is constructed it would be superior to working at the latter place, the proptosal seems to meet with general approval. Detaib ofi the scheme will not be available for some considerable time.
