RESULTS OF COMPETITIONS 111, V, AND VI.

I have the results of the above three oom'petitions (Paper-folding, Drawing, and Puzzles) to announce to you- this week. The paper-folding, to begin with, was most disappointing. I Ihad • thought it . was a competition that -would appeal to a number of boys among my leaders, and was much surprised when, even .after the extension of time allowed and -the extra prize offered, only seven entries in all were received. Of these, the 'best- is an excellent little wheel- j barrow made of brown paper, .pasted together | in several thicknesses so as to make quite « firm substance for the body of the barrow. The second place was given to a little sweets, box, neatly mad* of crinkled paper, and ornamented with, narcissus flowers, also made of crinkled paper, yellow, white, and green. Hie third place was taken by an Oxford irame made of pink paper folded in a, geometrical design, after the fashion of the paper-folding now taught in some schools. w These are, then, the successful competitors who take the first three places:— ' I. Competition V (Drawing)— The number of entries for the drawing competition, was 29, and the work sent in was of very varying quality. For the most part the drawings -were copies, and not taken from Nature; but as nothing was said about that -when the competition was given out, the two had to be judged together. The gentleman who very kindly judged them for me gives -the following four the first places, and adds the remarks enclosed in parentheses. I. Marcus King, Tapanui. (Shading highly commended.) v * 11. Daisy M'N«il, Heriot. (Lines strong and firm. Drawing especially good.) 111. E. Marshall, Waianiwa, k . Annie Stewart, Waikouaiti (equal). Highly commended :— A. M'Kenzie. (This drawing, ff a study from life, is deserving of considerable praise.) • * Hilda Winsloe. (Spoilt only by position of dog's mouth and hind leg.) Word Square :- Iron Xi v c Oval Nell VL Buried Proverb.— Look before you The competitor who takes -the, first place had -only one mistake in her answers—"inmost" instead of "inward" in the first word equare; she won 29 out of a possible 30 marks.
