CHINESE ON THE RAND.

We have been favoured with the following extract from a lette* reoeirea from Mr W H Jeffreys, in Johannesburg, under date the ISta! March, by his brother in Melbourne: — , „, . t i,i " With regard to the Chinese. I could write pages about them, but will confine myself to a few sentences. It » all calumny about slavery They are treated well paid well, fed well, housed well, and are eve; so much better off than in their own country. They are no more slaves than anyone who comes here under agreement to'the Government or private firms to servo them for two or three years, as the case may be. The Liberals seem determined to do their beat to ruin this country. If they do what they threaten in regard to the' Constitution, they might as well hand the country back to the Boers, as they (the Boers) will have so much more power than we that they wUI be abie to do what they like. As far as adults go the British outnumber the Beers, but the Liberals want to counteract that by basing the representation not on the number of electors but on the number of people, including women and children, and as the majority of the Boers have very large families and the British have not (and also many Britishers keep their families in other countries on account of the high rate of living here), that mode of representation would prive tl»e Boers the upper hand. Ip the Orange River Colony the case is absolutely hopeless, as the British are a very small minority. The British Government spent millions in conquering this eountrs*, and now the Liberals want to give it back to the Boers ! If the Chinese are sent away thousands of white men will be thrown out of employment, and ruin and devastation will be on every hand. Tilings are very bad new, as no one knows what is going to happen next."
