ASHLEY DOWNS
April 17. — A very pleasant function took place in the Taumata Scholhouse on. the night of the lGth, for the purpose of bidding farewell to Mr John Tait, who is leaving here for the Homeland, where he intends spending the remainder of his days. Mr T.iit has been a resident of the Waiwera district for the past 30 years. In the unavoidable absence of Mr Wylie, Mr Johnson occupied the chair, and after a few complimentary remarks, called on Mr W. Miller to make the presentation, a duty which he performed in a humorous speech. He had, he remarked, great pleasure in handing Mr Tait a travelling bag to carry Home his moßey, also the rug to keep him warm whilst rounding Cape Horn; and, lastly, a handsome , silver-mounted walking stick to knock down the first man that attempted to relieve him of his cash. Mr Tait feelingly thanked' the donors for their kindness. Songs were then sung by Me33rs J. Muir, M'Laren, and Collins, and a recitation was given by Mr Sutherland. Mr Collins also gaye sojne
selections on his graph.oph.oue. Tea and cakes were then handed round, and three cheers were given for the guest of the evening and for the ladies. Some games followed, and were enjoyed by old and young, a very successful evening being brought to a close by the singing of "'Auld lang syce."
