WAIKOUAIL.

April 19.— The ladies of St. John's Guild he!d their usual sale in the Public ! Hall on Wednesday last, when the fine I assortment of plain and fancy articles displayed for sale gave evidence of the : tireless energy of these ladies in their laudable endeavour to assist the work of the church in certain directions. There was a very fair atterdance of the public during the afternoon, and good business was done, while at night the hall was crowded, and various competitions were held, some of which caused much amusement. At the close the prizes were handed to the winners by the Rev. H. B. Jones (vicar). The following ladies took part: — Work stall, -Airs Jones, Mrs Templeton, and Miss Orbell; produce stall — Mrs Keach, Misses Kea-ch and Price; lollie and fruit stall (in aid of the Sunday school funds) — Misses Townsend, Allcock, Smith. Hallett, and J. Bray; refreshment stall — Misses Henderson and Templeton ; bran dip — Misses Bray and A. Templeton ; shooting gallery — Messrs Templeton and Heckler. Mrs Moir, Mrs J. Townsend, Miss ' Jones, and Mi c s H. Fodor bad charge of the tea-room, which had been nicely draped and arranged for the occasion. The total proceeds exceeded £38, and out of this sum, amongst other things, the ladies'intend to pay for some repairs to the church cottage, and also to put the church gates in order. The Domain Board h-as accepted tenders for the supply of 850 yards (more or less) of material to form an embankment on the Recreation Ground for a new track for sports, etc. The soil will be taken from a cutting in an adjoining street, and as the contract bas been let at a reasonable rate it is hoped some additional filling-m will be done at the same time so as to make the spot a really good one for recreation, and one that will be a credit to the district.

Municipal matters have been quiet of late. The ranger has lemoved, and, until another one is appointed, owners of cattle are taking full advantage of tlie good grazing to be had in the streets. Councillors are congratulating themselves on the overdraft having been paid off, and are wondering what next improvement to go in for. The Mayor-elect (Mr B. W. Fell) has a good knowledge of affairs Tvithm the borough, having been an active member of the council for the last seven years.
