THE SPIRAL STEAM TUBE CLEANER.

the instance of Mr Fred Brunton, th# New Zealand representative of the Spiral Steam Tube Cleaner Company, Limited, whose head offices are in Sydney, a considerable gathering of gentlemen interested in.the subject was held at Speight's Brewery on Friday afternoon to witness an exhibitionof tha capabilities of an invention which has for its object on entirely iworovect system of cleaning multitubular boilers. Under ordinary circumstances a boiler, such as that at M^essrs Speight's, v.-ith 70 tubes, would require from 15 to 20 minutes to clean out with the usual brush, and their an imperfect job would be the result. With, tho spiral projector used on Friday afternoon, the time occupied in cleanins was enly five and a-half minutes for tho 70-tub<* boiler, and an absolutely clean job was tho result. All incrustation or dirt is directly thrown out of the tubes, and seems to disappear like magic, nothing being left inthe shape of dirt. The apparatus imparts to the steam blast a si>irol motion, whichr strikes the inner face of the tube in thinl cutting; sheets. This motion is maintained! throughout tho whole length of the tube, and completely removes all fuel or smoke scale. A great saving of coal is the natural; result of such clean tubes. Messrs Speight' and Co. say that they are now saving afe" least one ton of coal per week since they began to two the spiral projector; but with, a. fuU pressure of ,ste.am to work Ihe projector and consequent perfectly clean tubes a far greater saving of fuel can be obtained. Had Messrs Speight and Co.'s pressure of steam boon up to its full power afc the time of the trial, it is stated that the 70 tubes would have been cleaned in something like five minutes, if not los*. Thos- present seemed greatly interested in the tiial, and' were surprised to see the process of cleaning being carried on without any interruption to the ordinary working.

* A g-ev.tleman who recently paid a visit to Lake Rotoiti. and who is an enthusiastic angler, assures tho Hot Lakes Chronic-la that at no time of the year has he witnessed a. greater number of trout, in any of the streams than is to be seen at present in the Ohau. ''The water is thick witlS them," he said; "and such fish! I have* never seen finer in my life." Taking ife that tho other streams ore similarly stocked' —and there is reason to belies o such is the case, —it is vptv evident the fish are increasing ar such a rate as to cause anxiety in' the very near future with regard to a food' supply. The Utuhina Stream is particularly well stocked tliis reason, and we learn that already tho offieoi-3 of the Auckland! Acclimatisation Society, who have been afc' work in this sLream. have secured a million and a-half of ova- from the-. fish. Tha Hamurana Stream teems with beautiful! fish, and the -ight adds considerably to the. atUaciivcnc3s of this elream-.
