A GOOD START.

Before a very full room and with every section of the trade represented the fourth scr'es of sales began last Tuesday in a very lively way, values again being on the upward scale. Three sellers put before the room a fairly representative selection of wools, and the biddings throughout we-e of an animated character. A few lots of Queensland new clip were catalogued, and as these proved to be well grown, light, and attractive a good inquiry ensued. It was plain to be seen at the very opening that buyers were not disposed to do much "fencing," all settling down to work with a will and bidding freely. Quite conspicuous was the onslaught of Yorkshire buyers, there being a general eagerness to obtain wools before the Americans wa-rmed to their work. Both mrinos and cro*«sbrcd3 fell rapidly to Yorkshire bids,_ and I v;as personally surprised at the fair quantities of wool which will find their way to Yorkshire markets. Tho Continental section was likewise busy, and secured some yery respectable parcels. Germany especially was an active operator, France giving good support to tho new clip in particular. The saleroom contained a fair sprinkling oi Amsrican buyers and here again comrjetition was forthconimjs for ecve-

1 ral of the best parcel-5. The result was •(hat an a-lvance m anjthing worth having was qxnckly established, competition wns very spirHod, and there were evidences that the scries would be a good one. Com pared with -the closing rates of the irst stixss, the following alterations tcok place: Mciiiios .. •• 5 per cent, dearer. Fine crossbveds .. 5 „ »> Medium crossbreds.. 10 „ i» Coarse crossbreds .. 10 „ » Capes 5 „ »> Since the opening night two very i?ood sales have taken place, the full opening advances being made. Every section ot the tiade is a free operator, and everything points to a very successful series. V cry shabby, oxtracty parcels are no dearer tb&n ia"-t series, it being the very good wools that are feeling mo>t the increased inquiry. If anything coarse croasbreds are a shalo firmer but a further advance is not yet quotable. I should not be surprised to see a hardening tendency right up to the finish.
