An original three-move problem contributed by Mr M. Sha.ncT Stewart, of Waimate, is liibhshed. at the 1-ead of this column to-day. Mr O. C. Pleasants, of Halcombc, who has two or three times been a competitor for New Zealand chess championship Honours, will be a candidate for Parliament for the Oroua seat at the approaching General' Elec•ion.

The desirability of having the chess clubs at Hamilton, 3STa.pier, Masterton, Carterton, South Wellington, Blenheim, Kelson, Westport, Termika, Gore, and Invercargill affiliated to the New Zealand Chess Association was strongly urged at the adjourned annual meeting of the Association on the 16th inst.

At the end of the twenty-first round in the Masters' International Tourney at Ostend the scores were : — Maroczy, Janowski, 14£ ; Schlechter, Tarrasch, 14; Marco, 12; Burn, Marshall, Leonhardt, 11 ; Teiehrnann, 10J ; "VVolf, 9; Alapm, Blackburne-, 8; Tchigonn, sn ; Taubenhaus, 3i. Two games stood adjourned — Alapin v. Janowski and Leonhardt v. Tchigorin, and five more rounds had to be played to complete the tournament.

At the South Wellington Chess Club on the 24th inst.. Mr A. W. O. Davies, chess champion of New Zealand, pitted himself against 12 members at simultaneous play. Mr Davies gave odds at the five lowest boards— viz., queen's knight at tables 8, 9, and 10, and a rook at tables 11 and 12. At 10.30 p.m. the champion had won all the games. Mh.- J. W. F. M'Dougall held out longest, and was presented by the champion with a copy of "Marshall's Chess Openings., 1304."-
