CHESS MATCH.

Tho newly-formed Marlborough Chess Club commenced a 12 a-side match with the> Wellington Working Men's Club team on Saturday evening, ths 19th inst. A wire was not available until 9 p.m., but the preliminaries occupied very little time, and play thereafter proceeded rapidly, very satisfactory progress having been made when the moves were sealed at midnight. Mr Howard, who is him•sslf a ohoss player, transmitted the moves for the Wellington team, whosa scrutineers were Messrs Shaw, Milner, Lauohlan, and Davies. Mr A. I. Board 1. — Connell v. Barnes (Ruy Lopez). Even. This was adjourned at 11 p.m., and is therefore not so far advanced as the others. 2.— Sergeant-major Mason v. Ryder (Queen's O-ambit deciine'l). Also «m even game. 3. — Cluttan v. Kelling. A Euy Lopez on very unusual lines — probably owin& to thesa two secretaries having their hands pretty full with the conduct of the match. A very interesting finish i 3 looked for. Kelling has force rnajeure, but at the expense of «m exposed position. 4. — Greenfield v. Morton (English opening). The former resigned at move 14 when the loss of queen for knight was inevitable. 5. — Buckhurst v. Janion '(Giuoco piano). Mr Janion is two pawns to the good with a firae game. 6. — Neville v. Pearson (Giuoco piano). The latter holds a slight advantage, having won a pawn. 7. — Orr v. O'Leary (King's Bishop opening). Mr O'Leary is three pawns* ahead and should score. 8. — Rudd v. Palkner (Queen's Gambit accepted). The former will seemingly have to lose his rook to save his queen; .his game presents a hopeless appearance. 9. — Wiffen v. Perry (Four Knights). Mr Perry has won a pawn and also holds a likely-looking attack. 10. — Howard v. Mackinlay (King's Bishop). The latter has a solid advantage in having won a knight. 11.— Griffiths v. Bryant (Four Knights). Even. 12.— White v. Appkgarth (Four Knights). Mr "White is a pawn up and is playing a fine game. The Marlborough team were handicapped in having to play without the services of Messis A. P. Fell, Harris, Clarke, and Burnside. The last-named, who formerly played in Sydney and Auckland, is on a visit to Wellington, and arrangements may be made for him to play against Mr Oppler over the board, thus adding ov.& more game to the contest, which was to conclude last Saturday night.
