OPINION OF THE WITNESS.
A lady in Wellington recently sent a copy of the Witness to a friend in Arizona, U.S.A., who in turn handed it to the editor of the Arizona Republican. Our American cousin, in its issue of June 12, contained the following kindly notice of the Witness The "foreign journalism" seems rather amusing to colonists, as we colonials regard Americans as being much too nearly related to us to think of them as "foreigners," looking upon them more in the light of a, big brother than a stranger : — "Foreign Journalism. — Through the kindness of Dr R. E. Lighfcburne the Republican has for perusal a copy of the Otago Witness, a weekly publication of Dunedin, New Zealand. It is an interesting newspaper, and -somewhat novel to an American who wants his news about three time? a day, and don't care how carelesly it is handled. The Witness has 84 pages of reading matter, five columns to the page, and very fine print, being issued magazine form, with a cover. There are therefore over 400 columns, inclusive of advertisements, containing more good reading matter each week than some people have in their whole libraries. There are pages for the farmer, the student, the scientist, the experimenter, and the general reader, > together with a number of pages devoted to recent cartoons and fine illustrations. In the miscellany columns appears the follow iner clipping that may be news even to some Phoonix people : ' Graham County Gaol at Clifton, in Arizona, is the strongest gaol in the world. It comprises four large apaitments hewn from the solid quartz rock of a liillsicle-. The entrance is through a ; vestibule . built of heavy masonry.' " I
