KOKONGA.
August 25. — With the exception of a few snow showers, we have been favoured with ft spell of remarkably mild spring-like weatber, and the farmers who have been crying out for rain and the housewives who complain of empty tanks would heartily welcome the change which set in in the shape of rain this morning, and which continued all day. By evening one could see the benefits to vegetation, etc. The winter being so fine, those who could, took advantage of it to push ahead ploughing operations. In many cases the ground has been in such a dry condition that a large area has been sown. Stock of all kinds are doing splendidly. Sheep on turnips put on condition rapidly under the favourable conditions. The grass has been so plentiful that many have found it almost unnecessary to touch the hay, etc., which had been reserved for the severe weather which didn't come.
School Matters. — The School Committee has deferred the mid-winter holidays till now, and the teacher has taken advantage of this week to visit the city, combining business with pleasure. Apropos of school matters, it gives mo great pleasure to record the success of one of the pupils — Bertie Logan, who secured third place in a recent competition (with 1000 competitors, comprising the schools of New Zealand), Wellington and Arickland coming first and second respectively. Miss Young rmist feel rewarded for her work of coaching when her pupil gives such a bright account of himself, and places Kokongain the coveted third place on the list. Changes. — It is reported Oil good authority that Mr Alex. Mann has lately purchased 1000 acres of good arable land from Mr M'Namara, of Kyeburn, the latter having decided to leave the district and take \ip lm residence in the North Island.
Amusement. — A spinsters' ball is to be held in the local schoolroom this evening, this being the first of the kind since the harvest home. Surprise parties and pit have helped to pas 3 the winter evenings pleasantly, and so break the monotony of our country life.
