LAWRENCE.

August 21. — We are still in the enjoyment of beautiful weiather, which has continued during the whole of the winter months and "up to the present— in fact, the rainfall has been all but nil, and for many purposes it is now very desirable. Some of the sluicing companies have had to atop work for want of water, and most of the householders' tanks are empty. The farmers have had a grand opportunity to get on with their ploughing and other cutdoor work, and of which they have taken advantage, so that everything in that line* is well forward.

The Happy Valley dredge is now dismantled, and most of the machinery put on railway trucks en route for ELelso, where it ia to bo again put in commission. Tho traction engines are loading up one of the pontoons to-day preparatory to making a start with them via- Beaumont and Eae's Junction. Mr. John Tyeon is the contractor for taking the dredge to pieces and re-erecting same, and a pretty, tough job he has had. We are with regret losing one of our pioneer residents ' to-day by removal to Auckland. 1 "refer to Mrs Jonas Haoop, who, with her -family, left by afternoon train, being escorted to the railway station, by a large nurnbei J of friends und well-wishers. Mrs Harrop having been in .rather delicate. health for some time •back, it was thought the milder claimate of the North Island woulld be more suitable for her, "consequently the chemist's business established " by the late Jonus Harrop some 40 years ago, and which has- been successfully caa-rifed on since his death by^liss Beitie Harrop, -was olisposed of. The family will b a missed by many old friends, who regret losing them froni our midst, and they carry many kind 1 wishes with them. Ths ground is being prepared for the erection of the creamery buildings, so a- few weeks' time should sen it an established fact.. The creamery will probably bs the forerunner of many others. . . There is nothing phenomenal m mining or in any other line except that the price of '"potatoes has taken a great jump, and as there are not many in the district an immediate fall in values is not considered at all probable.
