WAREPA.

August 19. — Thn weaitfoea: still continues fino and mild. H&avy rain fell for a few Lours last Sunday evening, but on Monday the sun shone out again, and the roads soon dried up. Some of the old settlers say tßat this winter has been mote like the winters they fiXQEKiancc^ in the early dai T s. when mowing

was over much earlier than now, and naturally the harvest and all other iarining operations were further forward.

Farming. — Some of the farmers have stared ploughing the turnip ground, and in another few weeks, as the sheap will be on the grass, all the lurnip gTound will be ready to turn over. I notice that one or two farmers have been sowing crop; but as the ground is still cold and wet, there will be very little growth for some time.

Debating Society. — A meeting of this society was held irfthe sohool on Wednesday evening, August 16. There was a good attendance, and a profitable evening was spent in listening to some 12 or 13 papers on various subjects, read by members- of the society. Amongst the subjects chosen were "Childhood, ' " Push," "Luck," "Clay Roads," "Obstinacy," "Warepa Hal'," " AtluJS'hcs," "Arbitration," "People I Have Met," etc. After all the papers had been read a slight discussion followed. The Rev. J. Oir presided, and at the closp of the evening conveyed a hearty vote of thanks to those who had contributed to the evening's enjoyment. The nest meeting will be held in Warepa Church, when the Rev. Mr Kinmont will deliver a lecture on "The Holy and will probably illustrate his lecture with limelight views. The lecture will be given on Tuesday, August 29, and it is hoped that their a will bo a largo attendance.

Bache.oirs' Ball. — This 1 winter we have been particularly fortunate in having a social gathering of some kind or other almost every two or three weeks- The bachelors of Warepa issued a large nutnber of invitations for their ball, held on Friday evening, August 18, and a great many from the districts round accepted the invitation. The night was fine and frosty, and the bachelors have much caTi=e to be thankful for the success which attended, the ball. Between 50 and 60 couple.3 took part in the grand march, and the number increased later on. The hall was nicely decorated with greenery, the floor was in excellent rendition, and the catering, in the capable hands of Mr Plato (Balclutha). gave every satisfaction. The music was su"gp'ied by the Messrs Roberts (3), and Messrs Laing, Crawford, and Sarginson acted aa M.C.'s. i During the evening several step dances, to the j music of the pipes, were given, besides songs j and graphaphone selections. This ball i 3 I looked forward to, and is now quite an event of the year in Warepa.
