Notes from Greymouth.

(Feom Oto Own Correspondent.) GREYMOUTH, May 25. The Stafford Waimea dredge is being got into condition to resume work. Yesterday the directors of the Slab Hut Creek dredge paid a visit to the claim, where ft formal opening took place. The dredge was started, and 'worked fairly well. The machiaiery came off the Kangaroo dredge, and is in excellent order. The pontoons are built of hardwood and kauri, which should last for some years to come. The spot is an ideal one for working a dredge, the ground being very easy and free from heavy timber a»S boulders. After -some alterations are made to the boxes and machinery "the dredge will commence work on Monday next with three shifts. It will take about two weeks to open out. May 28. Mining of all descriptions is very dull. In quartz mining a little bump-up was occasioned fey the of a reef in the Big Kiver mine. Sluicing in Blackball is looking very well ■with the exception of Montgomery's, which lias fallen off again, and looks more like a quarry «t present titan-aught else. Bignell's No. Town dredge washed up 240z 15dwt for" 124 hours. The machine is still tutting through a long depth of tailings. Another 10 d«vys should see the dredge in clear country. The Pactolus Company got 94©z 9dwt from Ivcth dredges. Both are working in improving ground, the end of the week being better than the first Callaghan's dredge is on ground in line with the main run "of gold, and only got 18oz for 128 tours. The Blackwater dredge only worked two days last week, and did not wash up. MOUNT iLYELL MINING AND EAILWAY COMPANY. MELBOURNE, May 27. At the half-yearly meeting of the Mount Xjyell Company, the chairman stated that the company's financial position was in every way Bound and satisfactory. . Recent developments in the North mine justified the expectation of a, further period of prosperity. The net profits were £145,708. Economies had been made representing a saving of £17,000 on the half jear.
