PUBLICATIONS RECEIVED

The New Zealand Illustrated Magazine for May opens with an illustrated article embodying the account of a trip in the Californian Sierras, and contains among other sketches, etc., "Pheasant Shooting on the Manawatu" ; "A Hunting Party in India"; and "Famous Yachts of Bygone Days." The settled departments of the n.agazine, such as "Passing Events," "The Past Month," "The Stage," "New Books," etc., seem xuider the new editorship to be assuming larger and more authoritative proportions ; also there would appear a decided tendency to cater almost exclusively for male readers, the predominance of sporting and travelling articles being very apparent. The Pall Mall Magazine for May is a •very pleasant number satisfying alike to reader and idler, for the one will enjoy the literary menu provided ; the latter the pictures which illumine it. The opening article deals with "Buried Turners," and! illustrates the neglected treasures of the great master entombed in the National Gallery. "Very interesting is the account by Dr Nordenskfold of "The Wreck of the Antarctic," while "Cancer and its Cure," an interview with Dr Doyen, of cancer microbe fame, will be as eagerly followed by some readers as will the article entitled "The Victoria Falls and the Bridge Over the Zambesi" by others, and .the "Character Study" of Mr J. Churton Collins by yet another group. Fiction is good, but not predominating:, as has been shown — it includes the serial "Kipps," and short stories by Arthur Morrison, Hamlin Garland, etc. '"The Round Table" enlarges — leaves have been put in, and seats there, as long as it is so well presided over, will always Be in demand! The Pall Mall at sixpence i« as excellent as was the Pall Mall at a shilling; — it is sixpence better ! Austral Light for May is a somewhat more varied number than -usual, containing a short sketch or story, several poems, a number of the "New Testament Studies," an article on "The Evolution of the Telephone." an instalment of the serial story, and a full muster in all those departments which deal with topics of the hour, news, notes, books, and answers to queries. The New Idea for May offers its usual feminine attractions in fashions, housekeeping 1 , competitions, past, present, and to come. and. the insisiance of the personal note on whioh it is built ; in its Children's League, page of favourite quotations, and " Let's Talk it Over " page. " The Memoirs of a Baby" concludes in this number, and a, "thrilling new serial" is announced for next month. Mrs Ellis Rowan continues her serie3 of illustrated articles, the current number dealing with the West Indies. "The Society Dog in London" is described by "An Astonished Australian," and an Australian lady doctor contributes a useful page under the heading- " What to dt in Emergencies."
