Cisunnie Ohiel is a better horse over 10 than 12 furlongs; still, the same remark may safely be applied to the Stepliiak horse. Red Gauntlet has a weight he should handle well, and Calibr-e should hove a good chance under 7.13, as "with 8.7 and 8.9 he ran a wraple of good races tit Ashburton. Beau Seaion, for a three-year-old, has lately been acting fairly well under welter weights, and at 6.9 he should give a good account -of himself. At present Vladimir or Calibre is expected to supply th winner. A field of 13 has entered for the Trial, and the recent form of Bombastes, Cavatina Cathron, and Blythemaid, together with others engaged, should fur»isb. -an interesting race, And the following trio are fancied in the order named— Blytheanaid, Bornbastes, Cathron. Regiment and Ailsa may prove dangerous in the Tradesmen's handicap. The former is an -improving horse, -and after winning over Jialf a mile at Qamaru, he came out a ■ccuple of races later and finished close up to Master Alix and Petrovna, and if bis racing has not knocked him back he should prove very dangerous. On paper, however, ♦lie race looks hard to pick, and if Ailsa goes to the post she should about win. The whaling season in the north commences this week, and Messrs H. F. Cook and Company's steam launch Waiwiri left for Whangamumu some days ago to be in •eadiness for the opening operations. i
