CHAMPIONSHIP OF DUNEDIN.

A meeting of draughts players, was held) lastSaturday evening in the Otago Club's rooms to consider the possibility of holding a. tourney for the championship of Otago or Dunedin. Mr it. Caldow occupied the chair.

After an ail-round discussion it was resolved to hold a- toxurney "for tlie championship of i)unedin," as it will be necessary to play during the evenings only. Mr D. A. Brodie, the present holder of the title, has expressed his willingness to relinquish it should a tournament be promoted to play for it, and probably ho will himself be a competitor. It will be remembered that Mr Brodie gained the title as the result of a set match with Mr George Foremaai several years ago. The qiiestion of the style of tournament was freely discussed,. On the suggestion of Mr Lucas, it was decided to combine the championship and a handicap tourney. Th« highest scorer, irresisective of any handicap, will receive the title and a gold medal ; and' a® many prizes as possible mil be awarded for the handicap tourney. This, of course, makes the all-round system necessary. The schema should meet with hearty support, as players of every grade may enter without diffidence, and be sure of the best possible practic-3 in the game wifih Ihe bes€~c-f New Zealand's talent, and also have an equal chance for a place in the prize list. It -was deeid'ecl that entries close on Maw 3; entry fee, 2s 6d. Play to commence on May 10, at 7.30. Mr Jos. Abernethy was appointed hon. secretary and treasurer. To ensure as far as possible that the handicapping shall be equitable, four handicappers were appointed — Messrs E. Caldow, Davidson (Sawyers' Bay), H. Montgomery (Port Chalmers), and Jos. Abernetliy. Thus players from outside ths city proper will nave every chance of treatment on their merits. A sub-committee, consisting of Messrs Boreham, Langsfbn, and Lucas, was appointed to dTaw up rtCles to govern the conduct* of the tourney. In the meantime the foregoing should convey a clear enough idea of what is being aimed at, and we hope it will m-set with the support it deserves. Further details will probably appear next week. Before the meeting closed several entries were le-ceived. '
