S«r«t»rt«s are requested v forward particulars ofgaras«plej-»^

TO SECRETARIES OF CLUBS

Any news, referring to bowling will be gladly welcomed if addressed to " Toucher Otago Witness." Full' publicity will bs given to it in these columns.

MJTfcS Bi fOUCHER

Messrs D. Smith and 3. Cowie played off for the championship of the Caledonian green last week, and the honour fell to Smith for the season 1905.

The Kaituna in their maich with Palmerston won by the small majority of 1 point. Mr C. Payne, although being the lowest scorer of the winners, managed to get two 4-'s in the last two heads. Sneddon's rink played ,a match with Payne's rink last week, when the former won.

Dall's rink played Sneddon's last Wednesday.

Carswell's rink, which is proceeding 1 to Invercargill, played M'Laren's rink, when a good game was witnessed. At the twentyfirst head both teams were a tie. so another head was played to see which was to be victorious, when the laurels fell to M'Laren.

St. Kilda and Dunedin played two rinks last Wednesday ; also Dunedin and Roslyn. Tt is to be hoped next season that the executive will see it-3 way to arrange Wednesday matches for those who cannot get away on Saturday, and from indications of the games played on the different greens lately I should say- it is likely to' continue. It would be the means of many joining the different clubs when rhey know that matches will be played. I know of several who would ]oin if they were certain that they would find members on the green. Kaituna on a Wednesday afternoon' reminds one of a Satwday. so many are found taking part. At the next meeting of delegates somebody ought to bring the matter up when I am sure it will receive due consideration.

Owing to private business. Mr Dall is unable to proceed any further with the testing of howls at <nre?ent, so those who have " poker " will find on proceeding to either Oainaru or Invercargill they will have just as much trouble there, -as a committee will be set up to test the bowls. I was very pleased indeed to soe that the executive will not allow anybody else to test the bowls, as I think one man should do it now that he has begun, for others may have- another idea, which would r>rove the testing a farce.

I have good authority for saying that the Taieri have sent to Wellington the bowls which were disqualified by Mr Dall and his machine. T shall wait patiently to see what the result will be.

Many bosvlors are surprised that Da-vies, of Kaituna. did not pass the testing machine, as most bowlers thought his bowls were a little on th-o wide size for a good drawing bowl. If this is. the case. I shall not be- astonished to hear of many surprises yet

The keen green of Saturday seemingly did not nlrase the Caledonians, as at the fourteenth head they were 13 ahead, and at the twenty-first head, to tJie surprise of all. the Kaitur.a w-ere 21 to the erood. having scored 34 points to the Caledonians' 8. I am afraid the split that has taken place in the Caledonian ramp will do the club no good. If the committee were to ask the several members who acted in anything but a bowline spirit to send in then; resignations, it would do no harm. When bowlers go on to the srreen to see their own club playing it is hard.lv the spirit of bowline; to criticise the Dlaying of certain individuals. Such was. however, the case on Saturday. The club had to put this season's players third, as the others would not play. even though they were asked several times. Conduct of that description should not he tolerated en a bowling; frrern. Hastiness bowlers had quite a nov-el "At home" the oi her day. Each member, by wav of enlitling him to admission, had to take an article of not Ip.s^ value than Is; also a nlate of oakn?.

The Palmerston play Caledonian on the lattPr's green on Saturday, the Sth.

The Palmerston Club had the misfortune to travel to Port Chalmers on Saturchv. and were disappointed throusrh the wr-* weather experienced, and had to return without baviner a tram-e. On leaving Palmerston the telegraph boy came on to thetrain inst as it was about to move, with a telegram, savins; that the Ground was not fit for bowlinp; but as it was the Ist of April they did not take any notice of it. On arriving 1 at Waikouaiti rhev received another wire : but not to be fooled on the Ist of Anril they wont on ; and on arriving at the Port, found out, much to their disgust, that it was not nn April Fool's me=saare that was s-ent them after all.

Dall. of Kaituna. will be miim« his brother's company going to Tnvercarsjill. on account of private business. Keast is taking his place The rink is— H Stolen ton. C. E. Keast, F. Stokes, and G. B. Dall (skip).

The electric light tournament was held on the South Melbourne Green last week, and proved a gigantic sur-res*. Lartre. crowd « were drawn to watch the rink tournament, and the club is ag-ain to the forr with a tournament for mixed rinks. The entries closed with 32 ladies and the same number of the sterner sex. "When will Dunedin have an electric Haht tournament on the lines of that at South Melbourne?

The Bssendon and Flemington Clubs played the semi-final for the M'Craekcn Trouhv. wh&n the former won.

Moonee- Ponds have each Xext week they will play

Essendon and won three prames. off the final.

Tii t-he semi-finals of the Victorian Pennant Arrnidale had a win against Auburn by a small margin of two points. This is the only game this reason in which Armidale has been pressed. A sensational sort of a a-amc took nlaee at Albert Park between Richmond Union aud Moonee Ponds, when at the twentieth h«ac) Richmond Union were fo many down that it seemed almost hopeless. At the n&xfc head each rink of the Moonee Ponds were down, 14- be-ins: riaeristered against them. wlien Richmond Union won by two points.

"VicLor'p has lo>t ono of her mo«t enthusiastic bowlers in the death of Mr R. Clark. For a number of years Mr dark was secretary for the "Viotoiiian "Bowling Association, and amongst the clubs he was .cry popular.

Mr A. Bam, a well-known Ballarat playei, while playing in the final of the championship of champions, had a surprise of a somewhat remarkable nature. Having played his last howl and lying two up and same, his opponent put down his final bowl, which ran so w ide thnt the spectator* immediately proclaimed Bain tho winner : when, to tie surpuse of all. ihc bowl shot right across, and took out both of Bain's bowls and hac7 the wanie, scoring one point which cost Bain the lc*s of the match.

The final of the championship of cham nion.s was won by A. Thackaray (Albert Park), who defeated B. Dwyer (Moonee Ponds) by 31 to 25.

Mr Forteseue pass-od through Adelaide last week, and had a game on the green. His enthusiasm is tco great to allow him to pas= a game in any town he goes to. Tt is notified Iha+ owinst to urgent private business. Mr "W. Dall will bo rmable to ti v st any more bowlp this season.

The Provisional Committee (Messrs O. Balk. C. Grater. P. Duncan, and S. N. Brown) appointed to make inquiries regarding a, suitable iite for bowling and l?wn tennis purposes at Maori Hill has acquired about one and aquarter acres on the Balrnacewan Estate, about, 200 yerds from the e'ectric train line.
