ENOCH

"He walked with God." Oh, blessed word! of hope us telling! Didst Thou, from where Thou hast Thy dwelling, With human kind so condescend To make Thyself this poor man's friend? " He walked with God" — 'tis all that's heard Of this true man — the only word- — - Yet what grand lessons could be drawn ! From that past life, in human dawn. i Our earth and all her varied lands Was fresh from her Creator's hands ; Yet, even then, Sin's stain and scar God's handiwork so fair did mar. And man, whom God with honour crowned The pathway broad to death had found ; J To lower nature gave free rein, ; Sowing the seeds of future bane. But Enoch rendered true allegiance To conscience — gave it firm obedience. Steadfast in Virtue's path he trod, Becoming daily liker God. He was not — as none arc — exempted From trial, but was often tempted To follow th' example of his day — I Taking for truth deceitful ray. ! He walked with God — his heart and soul Were centred on life's source and goal — On Him alone who satisfies The spirit's thirst, and stills its cries. And now we too, oh, blest assurance? By God's good grace may get endurance To walk with Him. He does provide In His own Son, unerring Guide. " Who believes me and does My words"— With authority before unheard — He says, "Who liveth in their spirit, Shall everlasting life inherit. "I am the Morning Star and Bright!*' Look, and ye shall not walk in night. Obey, and by me your life-course steer. Have faith, the" haven shall appear. He, though Divine, did condescend To walk this earth, our kinsman, Friend. Our human nature He did share, And cruel trials He did bear. He walked the shameful, dolorous path, And underwent th' Almighty's wrath For us. Dying as sinners die, An intercession His last cry. And still He lives, our Great High Pries> And to the Father makes request That this lost world may be restored To pristine glory by His word. —A. D. P. Dunedin, llarch, 1905.
