John Skene and S<m report xxnder date March 7 as follows: — Harvesting operations are in full swing now in almost every district, and the demand foi good useful harvesters and threshers is increasing daily. Experienced, strong, "willing men for this work are fairly plentiful, but for other classes of work they are hard to get, milkers especially so. We" quote wages as follows : —Harvesters, stookers, forkexs, threshing-mill hands, etc., lOd per hour and found ; stackers, 50s ; binderworkers, 40s to 455; ploughmen, 255, 22s 6d, with harvest bonus averaging about £6 ; others, lOd per hour; milkers, 17s 6d to 22s 6d. and in one or two cases, 30s; flaxmill bands, 6s to 7s per day; flax-cutters, 5s to 6s par ton; harvest cooks, 355; camp cooks (permanent), 20s, 25s ; cooks and bakers, 255, 30s ; shepherds, £60 ; musterers, 35s \ married ploughmen, £80 ; fencp-rs, 255; labourers, 7s 6d, 8s; jobbing gardeners, 7s 6d.
