ROUGH RIDGE.

February 27.— A very pleasing function was leld on Friday evening, 24th inst., in the school, when Mr John Moodie, who has been -teacher at Rough Ridge for two years and alialf, and his family were entertained at a fareiwell social prior to his departure to the Leith "Valley" School. The proceedings opened with ' «n action song entitled, "Here we. stand, hand in hand," by Misses Florrle Moodie, Myrtle JElayes, Olive Hayes, Annie Lockhart, Mima Beck, -and Leslie Perry, the action effect ±>eing very pretty; Mrs Islip, song, "The Scottish emigrant" ; Miss Nicol, song, "The soldier's grave"; Misses Islip <3), recitation, "Maggie actions); school children, exercises; Mr ■jMijean, overture, piano. Mr Islip, on behalf. «f the - residents and friends, then presented 3£r" Moodie with a handsome marble clock - {inscribed), and Mrs Mooclie. with a greenstone "brooch, assuring them that they carried "with them the good wishes of all their friends, and .-wishing them god-speed. Mr Moodie briefly returned thanks on behalf of liimself and his wife for the kindness shown them and for their beautiful presents, which -would always remind them of their pleasant sojourn in Rough Ridge. Mr Nicolson, sen,, spoke of the progress the school had made during Mr Moodie's time, and of the improvements he. (Mr Moodie) had effected in the school grounds. It was always a pleasure to look at the garden. He wished Mr and Mrs Moodie prosperity in their new sphere of action. Four little school girls then sang, "Jack is fond of shooting" (with actions) ; Mrs Saves, song, "The gipy's warning" ; school girls, song, "The old Kentucky home" ; Mrs Islip, song, "Mary of Argyle." Refreshments .-were then handed round, after which dancing commenced. A word of praise is due to Miss 3ficol for the way she has trained the littl© ones, their songs and actions being quite an entertainment. Everyone went home well pleased -with their evening's enjoyment.
