ARROWTOWN.

June 18. — The weather during the past week has been simply wretched, rain falling every day. There is no doubt that the seasons are changing here, as at one time we could always look forward to dry hard weather at thistime of year.

Arrow Hospital. — The ordinary monthly meeting of trustees was held on Monday last. The treasurer reported a credit balance in bank of £277 2s Gd, after payments of accounts at the meeting. Tend-ers for supplies to the hospital were dealt with, the following being the successful tenderers-: —^Cotter Bros., stores; medical comforts, R. Pritchaard; Joseph Jenkins and Romans and M'Sknnrning being equal for meat and bread it was decided to give them, month about ; burials, Jas. Webb. The trustees decided that the time had arrived ior the hospital to have a trained' nurse, and it was resolved that applications be called for the position. In giving Mr and Mrs GaMaatt three months' notice of the termination of their engagement the trustees unanimously resolved to place on record their high appreciation of the manner Mr and Mrs Galland liadL carried out the duties of wardsman and matron, during the many years they had held the positions. The surgeon reported that 11 patients had been treated during the month of May, five remained from. April, six were admitted, five discharged, and six remained in the hospital.

Vital Statistics.— The following are the statistics for the district for the year ending December 31, 190& -Arrow district— Births 29, deaths IS, marriages 3 , Quocnatowu district — ■ Births 2S, deaths 21, marriages 7; Pembro^ft district — Births 22, deaths 6 marriages 5. Lake County Council. — The ordiuaiy bimonthly meeting was held on Tuesday last. The business transacted was of a routine nature. The Clutha County Council wroteasking the council to support the following resolution at tho Counties' Conference, to be. held shortly in Wellington: — "That it was depirable and necessary that the Government subsidy on rates hi increased." The council v decided to support the resolution, and Mr V. Fiaser, M.H.R., was appointed as their representative at the conference. The Bay of Is'ands County Council forwarded copy of petition to Government piaying that legislation be passed entitling local bodies to receive a> 1-roportion 01 the royalties derived from thesales of timber and flax. The council as a body signed the petition. The engineer submitted an estimate of the cost of the proposed new bridge at Lower Shotover, aud urged the necessity for the work. The estimated cost (including the purchase of the necessary land for approaches) was put down at £6000. The council considered that the work was very necessary, and decided that the member for tha district be written to asking him to use his endeavours to have a sum placed on the Estimates for the work. The engineer also suigestcd that a road giader be ptirchased, but r.o action was taken in the matter.

Valedictory. — Mr John Cooper, who Kul beea employed in the butchery business of tie lato Mr W. Jenkins for about 11 years, and Ioj:

the past 18 months with Mr Joseph Jenkins, left Arrowtown for the North Island on Tuesday last. Mr Cooper, who is a native of this town, was very popular with all classes of the community for his courteous and obliging manner. He was an energetic member of the ;Wakatipu Mounted Rifles, havng joined when the corps was formed. On Monday evening the members of the W.M.R. entertained Trooper Cooper at a banquet at the Ballarat Betel, mine host Richardson having prepared a capital spread. Lieutenant de la Perrelle occupied the chair. After the usual loyal toast had been duly honoured the toast of "Our Guest" was proposed by the chairman, •who referred in very flattering temn to the many good qualities of Trooper Cooper, both as a member of the corps and as a private citizen. The toast was drunk wilh musical honours. Trooper Cooper feelingly replied. 'Xhe other toasts duly 1-ononred were : "The Army and Navy," proposed by Sergeant Jenkins, responded to by Sergeant Camming and Corporal White; "Agricultural snd Pastoral." by Sergeant M'Bride, responded to by Corporal M'Entyre and Trooper Shaw; "Mining," by Sergeant Jenkins, responded to by Troopers Sonter and Jenkins; "Local Industries," by Sergeant Cumming, responded to by SergeantJlajor Cotter and Trooper liiohardson ; "Tho Press," by Sergeant Jenkins, responded to Ly Lieutenant de la Perrelle and Trooper Tobiu ; ■"The Ladies," by Corporal M'Entyre, responded to by Troopers Cosgrove and Morrison and Mr J. Boyd; "Host and Hostees,'' responded to by Trooper Richardson. The various speakers referred in eulogistic terms "to the sterling worth of Trooper Cooper, and wished him every prosperity Jn the future. During the evening songs were rendered by Lieutenant de la Perrelle, Sergeant-Mtucr Cotter, Sergeant Cumming, Corporals White and M."'Entyre, Troopers Healy, Richardson, and Messrs Boyd and Mecalister; recitations were given by Trooper Cooper and Mr Boyd. Mr J", M'Keilage acted as accompanist. The company broke up with the singing of "Auld lang jtyno." "Football. — In the match, Arrow v. Queenstown, played at Queenstown on Wednesday last, the latter team proved victorious by nine points (thres tries) to nil.
