RACING IN NEW ZEALAND.

C.J.C. EASTER MEETING. First Day — Monday, April 4. The C.J.C. Easter meeting opened in splendid weather, and the course was^ in excellent order. The racing was specially good, and the totalisator investments amounted to £13,213 10s, against £12,508 last year. The 5s totalisator was a°gTeat success, turning over £1390 10s. The " double" totalisator was also well patronised, 954 doubles being taken, 94 of which had Vladimir as the " first leg." Only one dividend was paid on the 5s machine. When the tapes ftew up Lolah was the first ■to show out, just clear of Vladimir, Quarryman being the last to move. At the end of a furlong Lady Lillian took charg« from Lolah, the next division being Vladimir, Red Gauntlet, Bulawayo, and Kremlin, the last two being Martian and Quarryman. Racing for the turn Lolah was still in command, closely followed by Lady Lillian, and Vladimir. "With heads turned for home Lolah faded out, and Lady Lillian took charge. At the distance Kremlin and Yladimh put in strong challenges, catching Lady Lillian, and fought out a good finish, Vladimir winning by a head; Lady Lillian a length away third, just beating Cannie 'Chiel, who finished fast, just in front of Pelrovna. Yolette ran up into the lead at the home turn, and as they drew up to the distance Maro dashed out in pursuit, and looked like a winner at the grand stand, but Frances Lovejoy got up in the last two or three strides and won by a head. This order vaa maintained in the run across the top stretch. Coming to the home turn the field closed up a bit, and Boris had got almost in line •with Promotion afc the head of the straight. A few strides further on the Sfcepniak coll was in chirge, and, holding off the opposition, won easily by rather over half a length from Promotion, -with Bern Seaton about two lengths away, third, and Gladstone almost on terms. At the six-furlong pesfc Miss Lottie ranged alongside of Stai shoot, and entering the cutting Annoyed and Romeo were handy, with .Regulation next and Wairiki seventh. Austerlitz showed the way across the top stretch and through the home turn, and was first into the straight. A little further on Starshoot and Regulation headed Austerlitz. Regulation had all the best of it from the lawn rails, and won in good stylo by two lengths; Delania the same distance away, third. Time, Imin 41 l-ssec. At the next obstacle Aka Aka lost ground, but recovered a- .lot of it going tfirongh the cutting, and was alongside Cannongate at the four-furlong post, with Princess of Thule and Lady Raven close up. The leading pair drew out from the others on the run to the sixth fence, and they were almost on terms in negotiating the final obstacle. Cannongate being the first to land. Here Jewellery raced through almost alongside Romeo and Miss Lottie going through the cutting. The daughter of St. Leger had, however, had enough just before the home turn was reached, and when they reached the head of the straight Romeo was just clear of Miss Lottie, Scotty, and Ghoorka, with Regulation well up among the others. An exciting struggle to the post between Regulation, Romeo, and Ghoorka resulted in a dead heat being declared between the two first-named, with Ghoorka third only half a length away.
