By JRavenswokth.

MELBOTTEICE, Mardi 02

I Matters In (lie turf world hsve been ii-r 1^ enough in Victoria since I last wrote, iLe Sx. Patrick's Day m«etings — there were 20 h: Tictoria alone under YJB..C. rules— having Liecn licldj_ but the racing was of the unmipoit-irct kind. We are looking forward mow to the A.J.C autumn jneeiing, m -which Victorian hcTses. which include F. J. A., Sweet Nell, Emir, Mallard, The African, and JBoabsiil, -sou expecrtell to take -a 'prominent part. I± 'is quits on the xards that lEmir twill prove ths 'hero of the jneeting, «s he >was ;st Pdemington, urless G-la-dsoine >is >very good. E-mir'-B 'trainer, James Seobie, is still laid tip, ibut his ine3irrfl advisai-a-ar© -hopeiul that he will be^well enough to go otst rto Sydney to see his horses running. The joakey R. Lewis has ttil! >;cl Lharge of thcan.

MENTONE RACE'S, j Two las>nianiaai-bred horses were successful

g,t the Mentone meeting la3t Wednesday, ' &.M.B. 8 6 taking t/he Steeplechase andi Nikola. £.3, by Chtsterman,, the Welter Plate. Both were well backed, A.M.8., -with Chevally up, starting a -warm favourite in her race. The .horses went off in the Welter Plate in Indian file, with Moss" Deer 7.13, the favourite, last <Jff -bhe mark. Mr W. A. Menzies, who had charge of th© barrier in the absence of Mr <&cdtrey Watsoni, readily admitted after the lace thtvfc ii 6is sot a. success »s> a staartet. Canard, the ACaiden Plate winner, is a. gcodlockjng five-year-old chestnut by Figaro (a splfeadid perfozmier over hurdles a few years _ijfrck). CanawS, wiho is in. A. Fergusson'3 liable, was not much fancied. Tri dOr 8.12, | fey Trident, -was ducoasaful in the Jumpers' j jFJat Eace* while Langawarrie 9.2, by Malvolio, ' iccied a lucky half-head win from La Loretta ; fii the Welter Pyrs?. Though supposed to > Jbave dome no work, the Eiridspord mare Res- ; fried 7.13, owned by. the advertising m/jdico, , X<. L. .Smith, easily beat the odds-on favourita pifference 7-11 in the Mentooie Handicap. KYNETON RACES. T!he most important race meeting m Victoria in St.' Patrick's Day was at Kyneton, where Hie leading event, the Cup, was worth £150, the ; distance being a mile jandi a-quarter. The field waa of smaller dimensions than anticipated, only eight going to the post. The batting tpokr-a very naiow xaiige. Odds were •laid on the top-weight, Avalon, 9.0, and bar him : 12 to 1 could be obtained. The race was n«vex ;■ • xeally^in doubt. Silvio 0.7 ,iaced with Avalon tfor a time, but the favourite easily settled him *t the turn, and eventually won with ease from j \Echo 7.5.. Subsequently Echo came out and j carried 9.10 to victory .in the Jumpers' Flat 'j jR-ace. A protest was entered, his id entity' once ; more being called! into question. A similar i protest against him was dismissed after he | won at Echuoa, and the -matter went before the V.E.C. Committee, who dismissed an appeal . against the local stewards' decision, there being • no evidence to prove that Echo had ever run j under another name. There was no evidence «t all -bearing on the identity of the gelding - on .this occasion, and in dismissing the pro- • test the stewards forfeited £2 oi the £5 deposit : lodged by E. Davis, whoso horse Satisfaction *an second 1 . Echo is said to be by Wellington, 3but he looks all over a Lochiel. The. Escutcheon gelding Sou turn took both the Hurdle Utece and the Steeplechase, carrying 10.9 in the former event and 11.7 in the latter event. _ He only- had three opponents on the first occa- " sion,^and one — Colebar — in the Steeplechase, and"'the letter obligingly ran off. The Ballar»t winner Nevermore carried 9.3 to victory • In thie Trial States, but was easily beaten "with 1 ihia penalty by the Harmonist mere Florist I in the Ba^fo-ld Purse. Sunset, a, stable com- J •panion of Florist — botib. are trained by the ex- '• [New Zealander, F. Duder— was a favourite for • the Laureate Plate, but the Queenslander Ranker won. SANDOWN PARK EACES. Notwithstanding strong counter attractions, there was a first-class attendance at tib.e SanZtiown meeting last Saturday, when the leading item was the Autumn Cup, of '£100, one male. • The favourites were Last Choice 8.12, i owned by { "J3ol. Green, the bookmaker, and Czarovitch B.T, i j downed by Mr E-. Crawford, « .member of 'the' j _ W\R.C. Committee. - Last Choice was never • in 'it,- and though Czarovitch managed to run : tniiS3,- he was a long way "bsSiind Corrobore© | BklO," the winner, and Dandalla 8.7. " Corroboree ; xrai-in a forward position throughout .the race, ' jßnd/ iinishini, out the race "well, scored ttn easy : ' ffia. Hia form was an improvement on that ', khown by him in the Stl Kild'a Cup at CauMeld, f but a good explanation was forthcoming. His , >rider lost a stirrup soon after the start of , i&hat z race, and Corroboree did well to get as «lcse to the winner aa he did. T!he Hurdle {Race'went to Austerlitz 9.2, owned by the bookmaker W. Hillj while another membei of the aing in W. Gerraid took the. Trial Handicap ' •■with Wyee 7.3, who ib a Gozo gelding, and only cost him 21 guineas an Sydney last September. ■{Report 10.0 accounted' for the Jumpers' Flat [ £tece easily, while Anchor 9.6' unexpectedly won JKhe Steeplechase, in which the favourita A.M.B. cut up badly. Anchor's recent form has been •Very bad, lnpfc he .was ridden without whip or "Sjuira oil this occasion, and. the change had' a . good effect. English Rose 9.10, by Padlock, the Welter Handicap by a head, but. this j narrow margin by no means indicates the j """Baerit of the win. She should have (won iby a couple of lengths at least, but Chestermexe 8.4, jwhb -has a habit of hanging' out, bored her out from the distance until she had, as the . ~2>ost was passed, got her almost over to the judge's box. It wEs as well that English Rose ' jgot up" in -tame to win, as Chestermere's victory ■would have at cmce heen called into question, >net protests always cause unpleasantness. ROSEHILL RACES. .The racing at Rosehill in Sydney last Saturflay wias very interesting, as a number of good " noises were competing. Air Motor won the )weight-for-age event, the Rawsbn Stakes, nine ffurfongs, easily, but 8.13 was a luxury to the . daughter of Ayr Laddie after the , 10.6 under ■which she was beaten in the March Stakes, won by Contest, pn the same course, a week previously. The Havoc colt BelaHi, whose early form of the season, was very good, ran second, and perhaps he will render a good account «f himself at the A.J.C. meeting. Xhree of j -the winners of handicaps at the meeting — 1 Cressy, Ironmould, and Ohere Amie — are en- ! Donoastsr Kaaidiioap. There were > several! smart sprinters in the Railway Stakes, ' '- won by Cressy 7.0, and the finish was a close nne. Haloya 7.1 only being beaten half a length, •with Regio a close third. Cressy will have bM the worst of the weight* in the Doncaster compared with these two. He will meet Haloya on Bib and Regio on 131b worse terms. J. x <2hambera, trainer of Ossian, has Cressy, who comes from New Zealand, and is by tiie imported St. Simon horse Soult, sire of Sonica. Chere Amie, before winning the Cfefr]K:gford ■ '3file, had run unplaced in the Granville ; Stakes. Chere Amie is a three-year-old, by i'te Carbine horse Fucile. Ironmould, who is fey Metal, carried 7.4 to^ victory in the Rosehill iHa£d!ica,p, one mile and three furlongs, and •won easily from Sar Leonard 9.9 and Diamonds' 6.7. . T. Payten followed up his form in two-year-old events in Melbourne by taking the «Niirsery Handicap with Flora Macdonald 6.8, who is a full-sister to the Caulfield Cup winner Dewey, by Lochiel from Dona, by Savanaika tfrom Lady Graaiville, by Chandos. Both IDewey and Flora Maodonald wero bred by Mr Payteri. He has Flora Macdonald eigagedi in the A.J.C. Champagne Stakes. The Graaiville Stakes, six furlongs, attracted a big field, and was won by Brumlo, who, i» by Bill of Portland from Cooya, by Nordenfeldt, and is «yned by the Messrs H. E. A. and V. White. [Lissaduru, a full-sister to Brumlo, was covered hf Wallace, and sent te New Zealand a year sor" two back. RACING IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA. The Port Adelaide Club held a meeting on Saturday. Two of the events — Trial Handipap and St. Patrick's Handicap — went to . Enigma, who was bred in Victoria, and is a lour-year-old filly by imported Tostig from Kiddie, by Nordenfeldt's brother Enfilade. Gunbower 10.11, by Best Bower, the Hurdle . Itaco winner, was also bred in Victoria, and! ■ •o :was Bright Pilgrim 9.8, who took the Welber Handicap. Bright Pilgrim is by Pilgrim's from Bright Eyes, an imported mare by Arbitrator. The Steei)lechase went to Express 9.5, and the Cheltenham Park Handicap, five fuiloiigs, to Mucleay 7.10, by Goodfellow (son of Trenton^.

ODDS AND ENDS. In order to encourage apprentices, an allowance of 51b is to be given, to apprentices riding fn the Hill Handicap at the V.B.C. meeting in April! T3ie lowest weight nrast not, in any case, be leas than 6.7. Apprentices mAirrg to claim the allowance must lodge c copy of their indentures wiiih the club. No fewer tfaaa 11-1 meetings have .been or are to be held in Victoria vmder V.R.C. rules this montti As James Scobie was not making as much progress as "was hoped, he was brought down to Melbourne laet week, and went into Mr Fred. Bird's private [hospital. He cannot, I believe, retain anything in his stomach. At the Lancefield meeting last week, Hovera, i by the NeVr Zee.land-bred Hova. won the Hack ; B"ac"e, and Eustace (who is by Escutcheon ;qi Eiumarrah) took the Welter Handicap. ; Eustace, who was a. good performer in Tas- ! reania, was ridden by the Singapore jockey Wcol. He intends to leave shortly for Saigaport iwith Eustace, Link, Pilgrim) Father; and one or two others.

The hurdle-racer Cynic has been sold to a South Australian racing man, and has taken hid departure for Adelaide. Cynic is top weight in the Onkapannga Hurdle Race, in which he has a first-class chance. ■ Silenus has been gold to go to India.

The hurdle-racer Jaques has been leased by E O'Connor, of, Sydney, to J. Allen, of Gaulfield. The Point 8.2, by Lansdale, -won the Kalgcorlie Handicap, of 200sovs, one mile, at the Kalgooriie meeting last Wednesday, paying a dividend, of JE2S 16s for £1. Thfe Point -who was bred 1 in Victoria, -won by a., length and a-kalf from the favourite Perplex 9.0. Bandolier, by Light Artillery, was successful in the Stewards' Plate. Bandolier used to be owned by the well-known Melbourne bookmaker "The Count," -who had 10 luck with kirn. Aqu«. 11.9, by the New Zealiand-brecli Niagara, won the Welter Handioap. |The three o'i'her winners, Lockette, G unlock, and Yale Loch, were all sir-ed by imported Padlock. The meeting was concluded on Saturday, wihen the Summer Cup, of 300sovs, one mile and a-half, went to the Malvolio gelding Eland, owned by the Adelaide trainer, J. Hewton. It is remarkable how successful the Malvolios have been in big "events in West Australia. SandoVn, by Sainfoin, ;s; s a most vicious horse at, the post. He made several endeavours before the start of the Barfold Purse- at ifeiieton last Thursday to unseat one or two of the riders of the other horses, andi finished up by rearing and kicking A. Bdohaidson, rider of Grafina, on the head. Richardson fell senseless on the filly's neck, «tnd was lifted off. It was the intention of the startei to send the field away without Grafina, but Sandown continued to play up long enough for Eichardison to recover, and he eventually rode Grafina into third place. A fatal accident occurred at the Latrobe races, in Tasmania, last Thursday. Dewet fell in the , Steeplechase, and his rider, D. Keogh, was killed. *~ . Sirdar, by Splendor, won the St. -Patrick Handicap, one mjile and (a,-ouarter, at 'the Queensland Turf Club meeting last, Thursday. At' the second <h.y of the meeting, on Saturday, the principal event, tflie Shamrock Handa- • cap; one mile and a-quaitei bjuTi a distance, resulted in "W. Booth's Gozard 9.2, by Gozo, winning by a head from.- A. E. Dodds's Esca : millo 7.6, with G. Ferguson-s Marie Corelli a length and arhalf away third. The winner's price was 4 to 1, and the dividend £2 Us. Drornana, by the New Zealand-bred Mana (son of Musket), won the -Omeo Cup, of 70sovs; and Jingle (by tlis same sire) the Omeo Plains Handioap, at the Omieo (Victoria.) meeting last week. At the BaJlaiat Miners' Turf Club meeting last Friday, Cissie 7.3, by Off Colour, was successful in the St. Patrick's Handicap, and her stable companion S'handon 11.3, by Havoc (son of Nordenfeldt) won the Ladies' Bracelet.
