HEDGEHOPE.
February 5. — The ciops are looking well m this district at present. The mild ram of yesterday, and also that of last Saturday, was just what was needed, as everything had become dried up by the iong spell of hot weather we have experienced. Another ten days will see the harvest an full swing here. One farmer, I notice, has already made a start.
Sports.— The annual sports id connection with the Hedgehope Athletic Society were held on the 3rd inst., in a paddock kindly lent foi the occasion by IvTr W. M'Rae. A special train left Invercargiill at 11.30, arriving in Hedgehope in time for the sports. The weather was perfect, and there was a. large attendance of the public. The takings at the gates were a record for the society. Each of the events was well contested. A new item had thi3 year been added to the programme — a boxing competition, which proved a decided draw, great interest being centred in the event thiotighcut. The committee worked well and harmoniously, anl are to be congratulated on the puccess of the gathering. And here I think I may specially mention Mr Duncan M'Kay, the courteous secretary oi the society, who was unremitting m attention to his nuiltifanous duties, and whose amiabiL.ty and courtesy to all and sundry helped not 9 little toward the good feeling which prevailed throughout, alike amongst officers and competitors. Ball.— The Athletic Society's ball was held, the same evening m the llc-dgehope Hall, and' was largely patronised, fully SO couples b3irg present. The music was supplied by Mr Lang (violin) and Mrs Paget (piano), and the duties of masters of ceremonies were ably pci formed by Messrs W. M'Rae and T. Helm.
