OBITUARY.

An eld identity of Dunedin, Mrs James Heir, died at Wellington on tho 2nd inst. She arrived in Duii-edin with her husband (who predeceased her) in the ship Alpine, from Glasgow, iv 1858. Mr Keir was for many years in business in George street as a painter, etc. Tho deceased lady leaves a family of six foiis and five daughters. one of the sons being the proprietor of Heir's New Zealand Forwarding Agency in (Wellington.

An old resident of Mataura in the person of Mr Forrest Brown passed away on Friday last at th© age of 66 years. He arrived in Mataura about 27 years ago, and together with the late Mr M'Laggan erected and started the first flourmill in the. district. •Death waa very sudden, as h© was about 3iis usual duties three days before. Ho leaves a. widow, three daughters, and one eon.

Another of the fast diminishing band of «arly settlers, Mrs Chailotte Thyne Keid, passed away at her residence No. 3, The "Wil3ows, Dunedm, on Monday, Ist inst. The deceased lady was relict of the late Charles Keid, end vras bom at Edinburgh on August 13, 1829, consequently was neaiing 75 years of age, was married at Edinbuigh on October 23. 18<tS. and •two days later sailed with her husband and ihis brothers Messrs Donald and Hugh Reid, in ihe Mary, for Otago, arriving on Apiil 10 ISI9. Before leaving with Ins family for Saa Francisco in 1885 her late husband w=s largely identified with the early lnstoiy, municipal and otherwise, of Dunedm. He died at San ■Francisco in Decembir, 1897, before he could carry owi his expressed wish of attending the jubilee festivities here, and his widow brought the body to Dunedin for interment, and has remained, here ever since. Mis Reid leaves a large family of sons, daughteis, grandchildien, and great-grandchiLdren. The Rev. William M'Hutchinson, one <l the oldest residents of Arrowtown, passed away there on Tuesday, 2nd inst; aged 76 years.
