A CLUB FOE NORTH-EAST VALLEY.

A meeting of those interested in tho formation of a bowling club in North-East Valley was held in the Noitk-East Valley School on Friday evening. There were about a dozen gentlemen present, and Mr W. Mitchell was voted to the chair. Apologies were received 1 from Messrs D. A. M'Nicoll, A. M'Lean, and Forrester.

Mr Mitchell, after expressing pleasure at seeing so many present, stated that he thought a recreation ground should be secured for the young people of the district. Some time ago an effort had been made to form a bowling club, a-nd for what reason the movement fell through he could not say. He thought, however, that something should now be done in the direction of seeming a recreation ground. The new township cif Glenroy, owned by Messis King and France, had just been cut up, and a few gentlemen had approached the owners with a view to getting a piece of land. The owners met them very nicely, and stated- that they would do their best to further ths movement. A few particulars as to the cost of the ground and also of the estimated expenditure in forming a green were available. Three sections at the bottom of Glenioy, having a fiontage of ]30ft by 107 ft, had been picked out, and the cost of purchasing them would be ,£l2O, the owners having reduced the price considerably. About eight chains of fencing would be required, and •(he estimated cost of this v/a=s JE6 per chain. The foundation of the green would cost about £50, and a shed probably about £20, making a total cost of about £250. It was not yet known how the expenditure wa sto be met, but possibly the money could be raised by debentuies.

Mr D. Murray moved — " That those present (form themselves into a bowling club," and the motion was seconded by Mr H. Thomson and carried unanimously.

Mr P. Gray stated that a tennis club had been in existence in North-East Valley for some years. The ground they occupied at present sloped too much, and the players had to chase the balls too much. He thought that if a larger area of ground was secured, so that two tennis courts could bs formed, a number of young persons would join the proposed club. The game of teams would also act as a feeder to that of bowling. A sub-committee consisting of Messrs Mitchell, Murray, Gray, H. Thosmon, I. Green, and Cox was appointed to inteiview Mr Kmg on the matter of acquiring a larger area of ground.

Mr I. Green suggested that a piece of land opposite the old tram stables wou'd suit the requirements of the club, and thought that the owners (Messrs Eoss and Glendindng) might be approached in order to asceitain on what terms it could be secured.

On the motion of Mr Murray, it was decided that all those present secure the names of as many intending members a-s possible, and report to another meeting to be held on Friday next.
