The result of the intcrpro\incial rowing race between Southland and Otngo -nag received in "Dunham shortly after 5 last evening, but owing either to the excitement of the Otago Rowing Association's representative at the scene of action in vaguely framing his telegram or to their official in Dunedin wrongly construing the wire, the news became general that Otago had wrested the handsome Edmoud Challenge Shield from the Southlanders. The ■\\iV.<. no cYi'M, ivhs father to the thought, mul in© jubilations of the local rowing mm were rudely put a stop to when a labor telegram in more intelligible phraseology came to hand giving tho correct result — too late, however, to undo the confusion thus caused, and the tclegi.im^ of con. gratulatiun to tho Otago cicw from our prominent rowing men had to bu lep-eated; to tho Southland men.
