GAMES.
The two following games were played a' short timo-back between Messrs J. Alexander and R. T. Ward, in. their mst-eh for the Birmingham' championship.. For score and notes v/e ure indebted to Mr Alexander: — " Game 6165.—"Double Corner. (9 11, 22 17) Black—Alexander. ' White—Ward.
(a) This is now the "Glasgow" opening. (b) Varies fromj Drummond's play,^, where 15 18 is given. Is the move in the text something new? My books all give 15 18. (c) If 13 9, 15 19, 17 13, 19 26, 22 17, 11 20 11, 14 18, etc., B. wins. (d) 22 18 was suggesfced.to draw_at4his point.' Mr Ward thought it could be beat by 1 6, 28 24, 2 7, overlooking the "throw" by 21 19, 16 23, 22 18, etc., W. wins. We then triedjhe following variation: —
And I think White can draw. (c) 28 24 will draw here. Game 6466.—"Denny" (10 11, 22 17). Black—Alexander. . White—Ward.
(a) Tha loser; 3127, it was afterwards pointed out, would have drawn. (b) No hurry for 11 35, which was the move any opponent had counted on.—Leeds Mercury.
