Notes From Cromwell. (From Our Own Correspondent.)
CROMWELL, June 24. The weather has been very unsettled during the last few days, with hc-avy rain all round the district and heavy snow on tho high country. T,he river is not up * great deal, and is now falling. The weather is still unsettled. The Halfway House dredge is having a steady run, and 'the riveT -will not affect the dTedge much, as the ground is not deep. I believe the prospects are still rich. The Alpine No. 2 dredge is working steadily, tnd should have a good return. The Hartley and Riley Company's ground is laid not to be so rich this week. Another three weeks should about finish the ground in front of the dredge. The contractors for the Rise and Shine No. 2 dredge cannot launch the pontoons on the present low river, but may get a sufficient rise now to do so.
June 26.
The weather is now fine and settled, with aeavy frosts at night and clear, sunny days. The river is facing fast.
The Halfway House dredge is on a hard bar, ■.nd consequently the return will not be up to expectations. Shareholders need not worry much about it as the dredge is more than likely it pick up the rich lead in a few days.
The Alpine Consols dredge is stepped through the high river, and is doing some necessary repairs.
The Riley's Beach Company's prospects are improving, a.nd I expect the dTedge to strike good wash at any time now. The Cromwell No. 1 dredge has not started yet, but will probably start on Monday., The Rise and Shine dredge will be stopped Eiext week to put on some screen plates.
June 29. The weather is fine, and the river is falling steadily.
-.1 believe indications are improving on the Halfway House claim, as the dredge is now -working past the hard bar, and will likely pick up the rich wash again anytime. ,% Junction Electric No. 2 dredge is being pulled up the river to work some solid ground at the junction of the two rivers. The ground is expected to give fair returns. No. 1 dredge as w*rting for some machinery to arrive from Dunedin.
The pontoons of the Rise and Shine No. 2 dredge were successfully launched on Friday.
The Cromwell No. 1 dredge has mad-e a start dredging.
