Mr Blackmore, Government Pomologist, states in connection witjh grading that the Government should deal witl> the matter by a Grading Bill on the lines of the aot in fores in Canada, making compulsory grading to size, and marking the grade- on each case. If New Zealand growers desire higher prices they must imitate their competitors in Australia. He said that the Government should pass an Oroharde Pests Bill, to prevent the distribution, of infected fruits, and to compel growers to take neoeseary preventive measures. In order to give aD impetus to fruit culture in the Christchurch district, Mr Bl'aekmore eaid tbat he wou'.d suggest that the Government give a guarantee of Id per lb on a shipment of 20,000 cases of apples to England (freight to be 3s 6d per ease), so that if the fruit brought 8s 6d a case the grower would receive Id a pound. A guarantee was requireJ, because a oonsi durable number of growers could not afford ta pay freight.
