DUNEDIN HORSE SALEYARDS
Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co. report as follows : —The entry_ for this week's sale was a poor one, comprising only some half a dozen useful draughts and a score of medium class hacks and harness horsos. The former changed hands at from £40 to £46 10s (.the latter price for a three-year-old filly by trie M'Callum), and up to £50, ' for a gcod four-year-old gelding, just broken. The best of the light horses sold readily at from £17 to £"25, the last-named figure being given for a five-year-old gelding, broken to saddle only, whilst for a. good tramway marc £'23 10s was paid. Concerning the state of the market itself, we have to report that for over 30 years wo have not known good young draught stock to be ?o scarce, and in consequence of this better prices are ruling than we have known during the same period. There is a dearth of good draught horses both in this province and in Canterbury, and those having for sale this class of stock suitable either for town or country work should embrace lhe*present opportunity for selling. In this connection we may state that our winter fair takes place on the 4th and sth June, when it is anticipated that, as heretofore, a very fine selection of Clydesdale mares and geldings, colts and fillies, hacks and harness horses will be offered. It is safe to say that clients patronising this sale will obtain for their stock prices which will reward them handsomely for the care, labour, and expense involved in producing good horses. We quote: Superior young draught geldings, £50 to £55; extra good, prize horses, £56 to £65; medium draught mares and geldings, £36 to £48; aged draught marcs and geldings. £'25 l~> £35; upstanding carriage horses £30 to £35 ; well-matched carriage pairs, £70 to £90 ; cart and butchers' order-cart horses, £18 to £'25; tram horses, £16 to £27; light ha.-ks, £10 to £15; extra prood hacks. £18 to £'25: weedy and aged hacks and harness horses, £4 to £8.
