An Actor's Story.
Mr Atkins Lawrence, in recalling his appearances with Mary Anderson, says: "I was getting a little stout In those days, even though 1 was a young fellow, and, ac Claude Melnotte, I had a vest that I had supplied with three powerful buckles at the back. These I would draw as tightly as possible to make myself slim. "One night I had just finished my description of my palace, and knelt iown to cay, 'Likest thou the picture, Pauline?' when suddenly all three of the buckles gave way with a snap that set the people in the orohestra tittering. " 'What's the matter, Atkins?' Mary Anderson said in a stage whisper. " 'My vest buckles have broken,' I answered. "'That's all right,' she replied; 'I was afraid it wa6 your braces.' "
