Kahoutera, April 29.— The sharp frost of Monday morning preceded a beautiful day, and yesterday was warm and to-day quite summerlike. The cold southerly snap of last week lowered the temperature for a time, but while this weather continues we are enjoying a bewjt-iful autumn.

Dopartiug.— It, is with regret we learn that Mr Absolum, who by hia courtesy and desire .to oblige the public to the utmost of his jpower has gained general respect, is to leave IJS shortly. Those who have dealings with the Jiost office will indeed miss his pleasant face, •nd we wish him all good fortune and conKraitulate him heartily on his promotion and jra-nsference to Auckland.

May 1. — Last evening a cold cloud drifted up the valley from the south-eastward. This morning was clear, but damp and chilly in the gullies, and we have enjoyed a warm and beautiful daj.

Farming Matters. — Tho Assets Realisation Board have transferred a threshing combine and a large portable st?am engine from some of their North Island properties to the Reserve station here. The team went past with the engine to-day, and doubtless some oats will be threshed at the old station shortly.

May 3. — Yesterday gave promise of rain from the north-west, but it held off till dawn this morning, when a light drizzle set in from the north-east. A cold heavy cloud hung about the downs, lifting to the far mountain sides during the day, but sinking again this evening, and night set in dark and early. Health Notes. — Co-jghs and severe cold 3 are at present causing some distress in several homes. Mr Boyd, who lately lost his arm, is progressing favourably. Anglican Church.— Bishop Mules, from Nelson, was to receive candidates for confirmation at St. Peter's Church this morning.

Field Sports.— The shooting se-son was opened by local sportsmen "with the usual slaughter of sadly-decreasing native game. Disconsolate duck 3 are flying up and down the stream searching for their missing mates. About 100 were shot at the lakes on Friday.
