WAITAHUNA
"May 5.— A large number of friencl-3 paid a "surprise" visit to Mr and Mrs Patrick at their residence laat night, to effor them their congratulations on their having reached that stage of their life's journey— their silver wedding. The company comprised many who had known Mr and Mrs Patrick since their first arrival in the Waitahuna district, some 22 or 23 years ago, when Mr Patrick was in charge of the Mount Stuart School. Mr Patrick has been head master of the Waitahuna School for the past 16 years, and has afforded entire satisfaction to all those who have had children attending the school. Both Mr and Mrs Patrick are held in the highest esteem by all sections of the community, so .it is not at all surprising that advantage should be taken of tho occasion which . would enable their ma,ny admirers to give expression to these feelings, lot only in words but in a more tangible form. The occasion was. as stated, the celebration of their silver weddirrg, -when -tfeo Rev. J. S. Reid, on behalf of the 'subscriber? presented Mrs Patrick with a 'silver cake 'basket, and, in doing so, referred in eulogistic terms to both Mr and Mrs Patrick, and to jhc good work in which they have both been engaged during the time that he ha-? been privileged to know them. Messrs M'Ara. Ross, "West, York, and Garden also referred to their long acquaintance with Mr a;:d Mrs Patrick. an& expressed their pleasure at being present, and hoped that Mr and Mrs Patrick would be spp.Tcd to celebrate their golden wedding— a sentiment; that met with the hearty approval of all. Mr Patrick replied on behalf" of Mrs Patrick and himself, thanking all his friends for their expTOjsions of approval, and more especially for the honor conferred on Mrs Patrick by the presence of so many old friends. During the evening songs, recitations, and mu-:.icnl selections were rendered by different members of the company. A plentiful supply of eatables, provided by the " sitrprisera," being also dispensed, after which hH joined hards, singing " Auld lang syne," the meeting finally closirg by the Rev. J. S. Eeid engaged in prayer.
