Several members of the Peninsula troop of C tago Hussais and their lady friends assembled at Mr F. Black's, Sandymount, on Wednesday night for the purpose of making a presentation to Mrs Black. After enjoying the good things which Mrs Black had waiting ifor them, Trooper Jtmes Garr, on behalf of the Peninsula mem-bc-rs, presented Mrs Black with a beautiful ailver teapot, suitably inscribed. In doing so, ho referred to the high esteem in which Mrs and tho Misses Black were held by members of the troop, and also to the untiring energy which they had 1 displayed in anything that pertained to its welfare ever "unci its formation some four years ago, and especially to the trouble and expense they had been put to iv | dc-corating the hall for the anniversary balls — | in fact, he said, too much could not be said I about it, as all attending the last ball I cculd not but express their wonder and admiration at the beautiful display they had made. The following toasts were propesed and duly honoured — "The King," proposed by Mr Balsille; Host Lnd Hostess, pioposed by Trooper Gari ; " Otngo Hussars," proposed by Mr Black, "Army and Navy," proposed by Trooper Dicksun. The company then adjourned to a large front loom, which }jad been fitted up as a ball room for the ccensjon, and dancing, interspersed with gongs and lecitaUons, was kept up with much spirit till 2 30 a.m., when the singing of a verse of " Auld lang syne " brought a n>ost enj'oyuble evening's entertainment to a conclusion. The Portobello Ro*d Church on Wednesday evening was the scene of a pleasant social gathering, when the teachers and pupjls of the Sabbath School, together with a number of friends, met to make a presentation and bid God-bpeed to Mr William L"c (one of the teachers), who is about to leave the district. Ihe Rev. Mr Greig presided, and briefly explained tho object of the meeting , and after all present had joined in singing " Old Hundredth," the following items, arranged by Miss J. Aitken (one of the lady teachers), were pleasingly rendered:— Organ so'o. Miss Nellie Hitchcock; a number of hymns by the girls of the Sabbath School, including a duet by Misses Mathicson and A. Aitken ; songs by Miss N. Hitchcock and Mr J. Robertson ; and recitations by Misses L. and M. Arnott, J. Townley, and Mr J. Robertson, ilr John Stuart (superintendent of tho Sabbath School) referred to Mr Loc's connection with the school, extending over a period of nine years, and expressed the hope that his services might be enlisted in similar work in his future home on the Taierl. He had much pleasure in presenting Mr Lee, on behalf of the latter's class (the senior girls) and hi? feliow-tea-chers, with these gifts — an elegant inlaid writing-desk and a volume of ' Church Praise," Loth suitably inscribed. Mr, Greig nlso prpsenled Mr Lee with a hand-somely-bound Bible, as a token of gratitude, and in doing so spoke in highly eulogistic terms of the sei vires Tendered by Mr Lee to both church and Sjbbath School, "fie was just such a young man as would gladden the heart of any minirfler — ho was always in his place, and c' er willing to assist m fu'thenng the good woik."
