HAWKE'S BAY
At Gisborno, Horn Hirini, a smartlooking halfcaste, came up for sentence for iforgery. He had gone into the office of Mr •Nolan (Crown prosecutor), taken a cheque of which the body had been filled in, forged ,the signature, obtained goods with the ilieque, and spent tho balance in dissipation. /On arrest he said it was a joke, and tliat he was drunk. Counsel, pleading for probation, mentioned that prisoner had recently returned from South Africa, and had been excited by tho travelling. His Honor said : "We have sent 5000 men to South Africa Surely you do not imply that the others are going to act like this?" Counsel: "No; but, unfortunately, we have this case to tieal with." His Honor said there were really three charges — theft, forgery, and littering. Mr Nolan, being called, eaid he nad known the prisoner from childhood. JBTe had never known anything against his Character until this affair. The prisoner was Admitted to probation, restitution of the taoney to be made and expenses paid.
