SOUTH CANTERBURY J.C. RACES.

(From Ova Own Cokresfondent.) First Day —Wednesday, April 9. The South Canterbury J.C. commenced their Autumn meeting to-day in fine weather. The attendance wrb small, but speculation was fairly brisk, and the amount passed through the machine (£l3Ol 10s) only fell short by £91 of the amount handled on the first day of last season's Autumn meeting. Several bookmakers were present, and were charged a fee of £2 to bet in the paddock and £1 for the privilege of betting outside. The track was very heavy and holding, and the nature of the going caused the downfall of several highly-fancied horses during the day. In the Autumn Handicap Terrapin occupied a good position near the leaders until reaching the straight, when he came through and won easily. Lady Lillian was in trouble two furlongs from home. After a lengthy delay at the post, the field was despatched to a good start, and after going a furlong Ordnance, Summer Rose, and Sahara were in front, and the others were strung out. Ordnance, racing for the straight, came away, and easily stalling off a challenge from Cranburn and Narcissus won comforfably by a length and a-half from Clanburn, with Narcissus a length away third. Rawmore quickly put in a break from a good start, and when turning into the straight led Pallas by about four lengths. Fighting Mac was early in trouble. Rawmore maintained his advantage to the finish, and won easily by a good two lengths from Pallas, who was six lengths in front of Fighting Mac. Time, 52* sec. Dividend, £2 16s. Going out'of the straight Kotokoto was showing the way, closely atteiided by Whirlwind, after whom came Terrapin, Scottish Minstrel, Lady Lillian, and St. Elma, with Calibre whipping in. Kotokoto led along the back, and Lady Lillian and Calibre were both improving their positions when racing past the six-furlong mark. At the far bend Whirlwind was done with, and a quarter of a mile from home Calibre and Lady Lillian were both being hard ridden. Turning into the straight, Kotokoto was still in tho lead, with Terrapin and Scottish Minstrel next. Once in the straight, Terrapin had Kotokoto's measure, and, going on, won comfortably by a short length. The field ran in close order for three furlongs, and then Magnificent dropped, back last. Racing for the straight, Clanburn had a slight lead of Clandeboye and Calotype, but at the distance Clanburn had the others hopelessly beaten, and finally ran home an easy winner by three lengths from Clundeboye, who was a length in front of Calotypp. Magnificent was half a length behind the third horse. Cannonshot and Bonaparte led for three furlongs, just in front of Single Event and Lapidary. Single Event was in trouble first of tho leading quartet, and racing for the straight Lapidary went through, and won easily by two lengths from Cannonshot, with Single Event a bad third, about six lengths away. The attendance was a decided improvement on the first day, and the totalisator passed through £1489 during the day. A long delay at the post was caused by tha fractiousness of Single Event. When the field was sent away Orndance was the first to show out, and Blunderbuss the last to move. The former led her field throughout, and won easily, from Blunderbuss, who came with r. good run and got within a short length of the winner. Romany Lass was a poor third, six lengths away. Racing for the straight Lady Lillian and Scottish Minstrel lay together a length in front of Terrapin and Calibre. At the distance Calibre ranged alongside the leaders, and afterwards won comfortably by a long length from Scottish Minstrel; who was half a length in front of Lady Lillian, Terrapin a poor fourth. From a good start Calotype and Clanburn led Lady Medallist along the back, with St. Elma fourth and Magnificent tailing off thus early in the race. Entering the straight LadyMedallist closed up, but at the distance Clanburn came away and won easily by three lengthn from Calotype, who was two lengths in front of Lady Medallist; St. Elma was fourth, and Magnificent a bad last. Bonaparte quickly put in a gap from a gootl start, but turning into the straight Lapidary moved up, and won in a canter; Seabrook passed Bonaparte within a few strides of tha post. Time, lmin 26Jsec. Lady Lillian was in front after going a furlong, and turned into the straight four lengths in front of Pallas, who was the same distance in front of Whirlwind and Valentine.
