OTAGO CHESS CLUB.

ANNUAL REPORT. Your committee have much pleasure in presenting to you the seventeenth annual report of the Otago Chess Club. The principal items of interest are as follows Two telegraph matches weie played The fust was against Timaru, when 14 boards were played, and we weie victors, the scores being Otago Club, 10} points , Timam Club, 31 points. In the second match, agamst Oamaru, the latter won, the scoie being Otago, 4 points, Oamaru, G points. On account of unavoidable delay, the championship has not yet been decided. The handicap tourrey resulted as follows — R. A. Cleland 1, D. Forsyth 2, J. Edwards 3, W. H. Allen 4, G. D. Wright 5. Mr Cleland has therefore won the Throp trophy, with an aggregate for three years of 13 points — 10 points being the number required to win it. Messrs R. A. Cleland and J. Edwards represented the club pt the New Zealand Congress, held at Wellington last Easter, when the former tied for third prize. The congress this year will be held :n Christchurch during Easter. The thanks of the club are due to the following gentlemen for presenting prizes — Mr Warsaw (two prizes), Mr Barclay, and Mr Johnstone. Thanks, too, are due to Messrs J. Mouat pnd R M. Baird for conducting the chess columns iv the O^go Witness and the Evening Star respectively. Dr Stenhouse and Mr A. R. Barclay (in place of Mr R. A. Cleland, resigned) have been elected vice-presidents of the New Zealand Chess Association for Otago. The membership is satisfactory, though not quite as high as in former yeais, and therefore membeis aie requested to make an efioit to mcieasa it.
