TROTTING AT TAHUNA.
Friday, the 12th, is the first; day of this meeting. The acceptance list doesn't take up much spi-_e, that is so with pretty well all metropolitan trotting nowadays. In the period that is past nobody knew much about -the game, and lots of horses of all sorts were entered and started for every event. They entered in hope of a big handicap. When that was got they had a lash in, and until they got it they paddled about anyhow. Now that clubs are beginning to understand the business, and trainers are making a study of it, we have none but fast horses npminated, and, though I do not go so far as to say that waiting is wholly a thing of the past, I do affirm that it has to bo clone very carefully, since in the small fields every individual horse can be watched, and his doings are apt to be quoted against him. Thus it comes about that a short acceptance list does not necessarily mean poor sport. On the contrary, these contests between four or five horses are often productive of fast times and spirited finishes Such will, I think, be tjlie experience on Friday. 'We have two of Mr Buckland's New South Wales horses engaged — Daybreak and Valour, and all the others can trot too. I look forward to a good meetiug. My ideas as to possible results are as follow : — Maiden : Pickwillow or Cruiser. Spring Pony : Daybreak or Spion Kop. Progressive Handicap: Cowboy. October Handicap : Darby or Valour. Selling Handicap : Patience. Domain. Handicap : Go3soon. or Booby. Provincial Handicap : Gwynne or Spion Kop. Dash Handicap : Valour or Atratos. The second day's races will be held on Wednesday of next week, the 17th.
