TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 25.
In the" House of Representatives on Tuesday after putting an Imprest Supply Bill through all stages, the Premier announced the first slaughter of the innocents. The General Estimates were then proceeded with, and good progress made until the postponed education vote came up. This gave an opportunity of discussing Stoke Industrial School matters, and the debate was proceeding at 2 a.m.
His Worship the Mayor (Mr R. Chisholm) having some doubt as to the effect which the Municipal Corporations Act Amendment Bill, which has passed tho House of Representatives, will have on the usual mayoral election, communicated with ths Premier as to the date on which the new measure, if passed by the Legislative Council, would come into operation. The Premier replied on Tuesday that the act would come into operation on t'--s l&t January. This 1 means that the usual election will take place ill. November under tiie old act, but the mayors then elected will only hold office for four months— that is, until April, 1901,when there will be a fresh election under tfie new act.
