HAWKE'S BAY.
There was. an imposing ceremony at the unveiling of the monument erected to the memory of >the 10 men who lost their lives in the attempt to save others in the Easter flood of 1897. The mayor, the Bishop of Waiapu, and D earns Hovell and Grogan were the principal speaker?. The monument is 55ft high, and occupies a prominent position at the junction of the Marine parade and Browning street.
