GERALDINE.

I This club had disagreeable weather for its ! Spring meeting held last week, and Mr | Dowse was at some disadvantage in handicapping through not being able to learn the last of the Ashburton results ; yet, in spite of the»e drawbacks, the meeting was attended ! with a fair measure ot success, and £2026^ i went through the tctalisator, or £352g more than last year. The Racing Club Handicap on the first day produced an interesting contest. After some delay at the post, chiefly due to ihe freshness of Clytie and Nihilist, Mr O'Connor got them away beautifully. When they had settled clown, Proposal was ' cutting out the pace very merrily closely' attended by Clytie and Nihilist. Proposal fell back at the six furlong pest, where Nihilist took up the mnning, and led to the turn, '• where Clytie, still second m comand, ran a bit wide. Once in the straight the mare | was steadied and then was hard ridden. She ■ caught Nihilist at the rails, and a capital race resulted in a -win for Ciytie by three ; parts of a length ; a. poor third. In the Spring Handicap on the second day Ciytie stumbled shortly after the start, and Huku j was almost down, and never got on terms I with the field afterwards. First Blood led to the home turn, when Nihilist and Clytie got to him, and a capital race up the straight resulted in favour oi Clytie by a good half length ; First Blood two lengths away third. I Clytie, the winner of the double, is the threej year-old daughter of Phaethon that was seen | racing as a, two-year-old at Wingalui. She j may develop into a useful handicap mare.
