CAMBRIANS.

September S. — The month of August provea a phenomenal one for casualties, no fewer than, three accidents happening in less than three' weeks. Mr S. Morgan had his knee fractured and dislocated; Mrs E. Fordham, wife of Mr James Fordham, fell and broke her arm; and Mr J. Owens had his finger badly smashed while working on the railway. A most singular coincidence is that the three are next-door neighbours.

L?ri-ikinism. — Hoodlumism has now reacheel such a climax that it is high time a stop was put to it, for when it is carried sc far as to endanger life and limb as well as destroy property the public fail to see where the fun comes, in. Not wishing to expose those who took part in what they call fun on Sunday night, the 19th ult., I refrain from giving names, but 'I hope they will take warning ia time.

Social. — A social in honour of Miss S. Thomas was held in the Victoria Hall on Tuesday, 21st Axigust, and was attended by -the. many friends of the guest of the evening, young! and old alike. The people of Ca-mbrians prt- 1 sented her with a- handsome silver teapot forj her -services .here. The presentation was made; by the Key. Mr Crellie, who apobe very lr™ 1 V t

Visitors were piesent from a groat distance, ?ome as far a.- JNTaseby. Mumc was supplied by Mr E. Mcrgan (violin) and Mis slills (piano). Refreshments were handed loimd twice, and praise is due to Miss M'Guckin for Vhe way she cnriied out this important part of the progiamme. Some very pretty chesses ivere worn, and dancing was kept up till about o'clock. Songs were rendered at mteivals by Miss Molhson, Mr Murphy, and Mr Phihp. MINING. Fotdham and Gay have now got thiough with their winter's washing, and considering the size of the paddock cleaned up the returns should be satisfacloiy. There is no doubt that this party's operations are soinewhnt hampered by tne want of a better supply of water. The only other paity vorkrng in the neiah.footirhood of Cambrians is Mr G. Jones, whose claim is situated in Soldiei's Gully. B amour has it that he is doing fairly wall. Mr Ewing has shitted _his elevator in his upper claim in Vinegar J_< lat to that portion of his claim better known as Urcle Billy's old tailrace. Tiia reason for doing so is to get quicker into the golden ground The death of men in this district just now is very kee.ily iclt by claimholders. Mr Ewing, .theiofoie, finds it very difficult to get men to work in his claim, and has to york short-handed. Hi^> Vinegar Hill and lower liafc claims 01c both Bimfc down at present. The hill in Hughes md Morgan's claim is proving very difficult to woik, ilie non-go] den giound slipping in on them, cubing them a considerable amount oi e:ctia a labour, oncl retarding- jtheir operations 111 tlie iace" oi the glaim. ~"' - -..._- - „ '
